The Unifying Force

Published on

When we travel, we bring our whole country with us--that is our baggage. I'm a transplant from the Philippines. My baggage on collaboration is "Bayanihan" which means the spirit of unity in an effort to achieve a common objective. The evolving relationships in collaboration have an element that becomes the unifying force in a given point in time.

  • Introduction - Inherited Collaboration
    That’s me in the corner!
What sort of baggage did I bring with me when I joined the Taliesin community. The most striking is the concept of Bayanihan - a Filipino tradition referring to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective. Literally, the process involves carrying a house to its new location.

  • 3 Models of Collaboration from Past, Present, Future
The evolving relationships in collaborative groups have a unique element that becomes the unifying force for that era.

  • Past
    Apprenticeship - Past
Using Frank Lloyd Wright as an example, he was a dominant figure behind the process of building his landmark structures. The leadership structure was vertical with him being the dominant collaborator and his apprentices the pencils in his hand. Tell the story about building the ubiquitous desert masonry wall using it as metaphor.

  • Past
    Master Architect - Dominant Collaborator
His strength is his knowledge and ability to pass it on

  • Past
    Apprentice
Strength is his ability to listen and absorb the knowledge

  • Past
    That’s me in the corner!
    The cultural diversity
of apprentices and the ideas they brought with them have contributed to producing Taliesin West, a national historic landmark

  • Past
    Language differences

  • Past
    Social diversity

  • Past
That’s really me in the middle!
Tell the story about building the ubiquitous desert masonry wall using it as metaphor.

  • Past
Tell the story about building the ubiquitous desert masonry wall using it as metaphor.

  • Present
    Virtual Reality - Present
The advent of the internet allowed project teams to collaborate virtually at multiple timezones, across geographical locations

  • Present
    Architect - Network Collaborator
His strength is his ability to communicate designs even before it’s built via 3d, 4d, 5d, animation, etc.
Can take projects beyond office geographical position
    Consultants
Ability to detect errors via clash detection before building

  • Present
Use Portable Transient Shelter Pods as example of this type of collaboration

  • Present
    VIRTUAL REALITY
Use Portable Transient Shelter Pods as example of this type of collaboration

  • Future
  • Future
    Augmented Reality - Future
Use N Building in Tokyo as example of this type of collaboration
    Architect
His designs allow for Media Architecture
    Consultants
The project will involve a new breed of consultants not traditionally part of an building project
    End User - Active Collaborator
The end-user becomes an active participant in a building or space via tweets, GPS, etc, thereby enhancing or customizing his experience of the space therefore making him a dynamic collaborator to the building

  • Conclusion - Altered Collaboration
The most striking is the concept of Bayanihan - is now altered with embedded information. In the current project I’m doing, collaboration can be composed of QR codes embedded, iPhone or iPad (Hey, it’s the same thing anyway, only the size is different, right?) will give casual observers an understanding of bayanihan, diversity will dominate the group dynamics (women, minority, etc.)

  • Conclusion
    Pass the ball
