- Step 1. Be wary of e-mails that ask for personal information, such as social security number, birthday, and passwords, among other things. Even if the e-mail looks like a correspondence from your bank or credit card provider, you should not reply to these suspicious looking e-mails. Financial institutions and companies will not send you e-mail alerts without proper verification and ask personal information from you via e-mail.

So, if you can see various problems and errors in the email, you can safely assume that this did not come from top companies.

More often than not, viruses and other malwares lurk in such emails and opening them or downloading attached file will make you a victim of viruses or other rip-off spamming mechanisms.
