    Notes on slide 1

Compuserve was one of the first online commercial services that provided users with a way of interacting via closed links, bought out by AOL in the early 1990’s The Well ( Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link ) first appeared in 1985 and was one of the first virtual communities that used the Internet technologies to enable people to via a text based UNIX system. AOL – America Online, was one of the first web based online communities, but it was closed and didn’t allow access to the WWW at first. Geocities – was an online service that allowed people to create their own web page and host it in a ‘City’ of their choice, according to it’s content. Now owned by Yahoo!, it closes this year – 2009. Forums and Chatrooms became popular as the web consciousness grew and expanded. Whilst forums do allow people to create limited profiles, chat rooms were often a place to ‘drop by’ and in which you could be anything or anyone. Friendster was the first of the online social networks as we understand them today. It allowed people to link to other people, add information about themselves and generally keep in contact.
