The face of business is changing rapidly with the rise of Social Networking services such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Now, it is no longer enough to be seen at networking events, you now need to be working on how you and your business are seen by others across the Internet. This is the time of the \'Personal Brand\'.

Now, more than ever, people buy from others that they know and trust, they will seek recommendations from their friends and colleagues to determine who they should work with when it comes to delivering the key products and services that their business needs to succeed. Social Marketing strategies that utilise the best that the social networks has to offer are a highly effective force in this brave, new environment.

For those who have a professional element to their worklife, then an effective profile on the social network of choice for business, LinkedIn, is an absolute must. Yes, many of us get started on it, but how do you complete it, what matters and what doesn\'t.

  • 2. Network Updates <ul><li>The most important part of LinkedIn (in my opinion) </li></ul><ul><li>Update regularly (use www.ping.fm if necessary) </li></ul><ul><li>Shows latest activity quickly and easily without having to trawl for it </li></ul>

The Overview <ul><li>Write from the mindset of the person reading it </li></ul><ul><li>Create an engaging and descriptive 'baby bio' for search </li></ul><ul><li>Current – should be current </li></ul><ul><li>Past should be relevant to your current objectives </li></ul><ul><li>Don't use the default 'My Website' </li></ul><ul><li>Add a CURRENT photo as an aide mémoire </li></ul>
  • 4. The Summary <ul><li>Make sure you include one! </li></ul><ul><li>Talk about your CURRENT role </li></ul><ul><li>Explain what makes YOU stand out </li></ul><ul><li>Tell people about your successes </li></ul><ul><li>Include your specialities, the keywords that matter </li></ul>
  • 5. Your Experience <ul><li>Your job title </li></ul><ul><li>Who you worked for </li></ul><ul><li>The length of time you worked for them </li></ul><ul><li>Your objectives, projects you worked on, your achievements in this role. </li></ul>

Your Education <ul><li>Matters – believe it or not, particularly in the professions </li></ul><ul><li>Include only what's relevant </li></ul><ul><li>Add in training courses if your education finished early </li></ul><ul><li>Add in additional notes about the most important parts of your training and eduction – highlight those that are relevant to your current business </li></ul>

Additional Information <ul><li>This is what makes you REAL </li></ul><ul><li>Include all your websites – if you have more than one </li></ul><ul><li>Add in your interests – as long as they are suitable for the audience </li></ul><ul><li>Talk about the groups you belong too, especially if they link to your business. </li></ul>

Using Applications <ul><li>Most Use RSS (really simple syndication) </li></ul><ul><li>The easiest ones to include are: </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Blog – keep up with your networks postings </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Wordpress blog – show your own writing off </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Slideshare/Google Presentation – your latest ppt presentations </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Amazon reading list – engage with others </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Company buzz – powered by twitter so you could check keywords as well </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>LinkedIn Polls – what’s your wicked issue? </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Events – create or join </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Tripit – for meeting up when you are out & about </li></ul></ul></ul>

Final Suggestions <ul><li>Make sure you add connections – this spreads your network </li></ul><ul><li>Ask for recommendations </li></ul><ul><li>Include your contact details and contact settings </li></ul><ul><li>Check the settings to make sure you aren't 'turned off' </li></ul><ul><li>Join groups – it helps to make you visible </li></ul>
