PRIORITY REGISTRATION FORNON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS AT CSUSB PROPOSAL By: Elder Linares CSUSB Student
Many CSUSB non-traditional students encounter unusual challenges in the registration system that inhibit their academic progress and threaten their timely graduation.
• The goal of this proposal is to provide a transparent, systematic mechanism for administering priority registration to non- traditional students at CSUSB.
Non-traditional Students at CSUSB 1 • Are increasing in number • Help the university 2 remain competitive. • Contribute to the overall 3 development of CSUSB.
The number of non-traditional students--those who are over age 25, have families, are employed full-time, or enrolled part-time--is steadily 1. increasing throughout the nation.
USA Today reports that according to theNational Center for EducationStatistics, about half of todays students arefinancially independent, 49 percent areenrolled part-time, 38 percent have full-time jobs, and 27 percent have dependents.
Recent statistics released bythe University of Louisiana systemindicate that non-traditional students 2make up a significant percentage ofthe student body.
As a result, many institutions are creatingprograms designed to help such studentsbetter juggle their responsibilities
"Were becoming very cognizantof student schedules andchanging class offerings soclasses are extending later in theday," noted Randy Moffett,president of the University ofLouisiana System, who wasinterviewed by The News-Star.
"Weve changed counselingand advising opportunities tofocus on the needs of thenon-traditional students whoare also focused on work. Itsa cultural shift to meet theneeds of our students."
Non-traditional studentscontribute to highereducation by bringing aunique perspective to the 3classroom.
Their life experiences helpcreate an environmentboth enriching andstimulating for studentsand faculty members
In conclusionPriority registration is a need of CSUSB non-traditional students and as such should not beoverlooked to ensure a situation for everyone.
Summary 1• The number of non-traditional students is steadily increasing.
2• Non-traditional students help universities remain competitive. – It is important to focus on meeting their needs in order to help them stay in school. Priority registration privileges should be granted.
3• Non-traditional students contribute to the overall development of the campus.
