4. 4. REBRANDING HEMP AS CANTERPENE MAKES SENSE FOR THE NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCT / DSHEA FOOD SUPPLEMENT MARKETS
    5. 5. 35 YEARS AGO RAPESEED EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS AFFECTING HEMP TODAY

Growers needed to rebrand something that was associated with a machine oil regarded as too toxic for humans to consume

Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed (LEAR)?

“ CANadian source of OLeic Acid” became CANOLA

It was promoted as a safe, nutritious, multi-purpose human and animal food ingredient

    6. 6. Hemp is undergoing a similar identity crisis i n the minds of many today
    7. 7.

When you Google “hemp” you get recreational and medicinal marijuana “Hits” because “pot people” use “hemp” indiscriminately when speaking about marijuana

    8. 8. SOME MARIJUANA PRODUCTS associate cannabis with health benefits and socially “sexy” memes such as organic or chemical free
    9. 9. SOME CANADIAN HEMP PRODUCTS ASSOCIATE HEMP WITH MARIJUANA
    10. 10. ASSOCIATING HEMP WITH MARIJUANA IS CREATING CONSUMER CONFUSION

Solutions:

Litigate?

Regulate?

Educate?

Ignore?

    11. 11. AFTER MUCH CONSIDERATION WE CONCLUDED NONE OF THE ABOVE SOLUTIONS ARE PRACTICAL OR COST EFFECTIVE

Some hemp manufacturers want to capitalize on the science which has popularized the term “Medical Marijuana”

The best solution: REBRANDING

    12. 12. REBRAND CANADIAN HEMP AS CANTERPENE

We link Canadian Hemp with the message

“ Extend Health-span and Lifespan naturally with cannabis chemistry”

Canterpene expands the functional chemistry beyond arginine and omega3’s to include cannabinoids and terpenes

    13. 13. WE HAVE PATENTED CANTERPENE AS A PROPRIETARY FORMULATION OF MILLED HEMPSEED
    14. 14. DOES CANTERPENE HAVE A MARKET?

-Healthspan and lifespan extension are new unmet needs

-Personalized /Individualized Medicine

is an emerging Industry

-”Bockbuster” Pharma is migrating towards “mega-Niche” Pharma

    15. 15. AGING CAN BE BRUTAL
    16. 16. IT IS POSSIBLE TO GROW OLDER WITHOUT AGING AT ANY AGE 60 yrs old 80 yrs old
    17. 17. ANTIAGING IS AN ENORMOUS MARKET

76 million baby boomers in the US

6 million “boomies” in Canada

Boomers now 48 – 64 and have begun to experience the “aging process” firsthand

This generation has redefined each stage of their lives and is currently redefining aging

    18. 18. BOOMERS REGARD AGING IS A DISEASE …
    19. 19. … THAT AFFECTS EVERYONE
    20. 20. … AND IS 100 PERCENT FATAL
    21. 21. THIS IS THE NEW VIEW OF AGING Bob Delmonteque, age 84
    22. 22. THE TWO PILLARS OF HEALTH Prevention Early Detection
    23. 23. CANTERPENE CAN HELP AS A PREVENTIVE ANTIAGING STRATEGY

Science has linked numerous Cannabis compounds found in Canterpene with beneficial effects on the diseases resulting from “normal” aging

Canterpene captures much that other conventional hemp supplements have ignored

    24. 24. A toolbox for slowing aging & regenerating damage is emerging: e.g. Plastoquinine..targeting oxidative stress p
    25. 25. And “TA65” targeting telomerase gene activation
    26. 26. CAN CANTERPENE WORK AS A HEALTHSPAN AND LIFESPAN EXTENSION TOOL?

    30. 31. WHILE AGING IS NOT LEGALLY CLASSED AS A DISEASE…..
    31. 32. SOME DISEASES/CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH AGING ARE

Oxidative stress

Arthritis

Central nervous system degeneration

Parkinson’s

Alzheimer’s

Cannabidiol (CBD) the major cannabinoid in hemp has been shown to be of benefit in each of these and many other conditions
    32. 33. OXIDATIVE STRESS

CBD treatment significantly reduced oxidative stress; decreased the levels of tumor necrosis factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1; and prevented retinal cell death and vascular hyperpermeability in the diabetic retina. Consistent with these effects, CBD treatment also significantly inhibited p38 MAP kinase in the diabetic retina. These results demonstrate that CBD treatment reduces neurotoxicity, inflammation, and BRB breakdown in diabetic animals.

EL Remessey AB et al. Neuroprotective and blood-retinal barrier-preserving effects of cannabidiol in experimental diabetes. Am J Pathol. 2006 Jan;168(1):235-44.

    33. 34. ARTHRITIS

These potentially anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, together with the lack of psychotropic effect and low toxicity prompted us to test the potential of CBD as a therapeutic agent in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA).

RESULTS: “We report that CBD has a beneficial therapeutic action on established CIA.”

Malfait AM et al. PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Evidence suggests that cannabinoids may prove useful in Parkinson's disease by inhibiting the excitotoxic neurotransmitter glutamate and counteracting oxidative damage to dopaminergic neurons

Croxford JL. Therapeutic potential of cannabinoids in CNS disease. CNS Drugs. 2003;17(3):179-202.

It seems that cannabinoids could delay or even stop progressive degeneration of brain dopaminergic systems, a process for which there is presently no prevention. In combination with currently used drugs, cannabinoids might represent, qualitatively, a new approach to the treatment of PD, making it more effective.

Sevcik J, Masek K Potential role of cannabinoids in Parkinson's disease DRUG AGING 16 (6): 391-395 JUN 2000

    35. 36. ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Memory loss, the first and primary symptom of Alzheimer’s disease, can be slowed down significantly in mice by cannabidiol.

In a study at the Cajal Institute in Madrid, Spain, mice were injected with a molecule found in the brain of humans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and then treated for one week with cannabidiol.

Those mice injected with cannabidiol successfully performed the task within 25-30 seconds, compared to control mice, who took almost double the amount of time, 45-50 seconds, to complete the task.

See also: Iuvone T, Esposito G, Esposito R, et al.
