Photosynthesis

 1. 1. Two stages of photosynthesis

Capturing the sun’s energy

Using energy to make food

 2. 2. 1 st Stage of Photosynthesis

Chlorophyll and other pigments Capture energy from sunlight during photosynthesis

 3. 3. Chlorophyll

makes plants appear green

 4. 4. 2 nd Stage of Photosynthesis

The cell uses the energy from sunlight to make food from the raw materials

 5. 5. Carbon Dioxide and Water

Are the raw materials of photosynthesis

 6. 6. Stomata

An opening in the plant where carbon dioxide enters the plant and oxygen leaves

 7. 7. Oxygen and sugars

Are the products, what plants produce, during photosynthesis

 8. 8. Photosynthesis benefits heterotrophs

By creating food to eat and adding oxygen to the atmosphere

 9. 9. Autotroph

An organism that makes its own food, like plants

 10. 10. Heterotroph

An organism that does not produce its own food internally

 11. 11. Photosynthesis Equation

6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + Energy  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2

Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy from the sun  sugar (glucose) + oxygen

 12. 12. What does the plant do with the sugar it makes

Uses it for food (Breaks down the sugar to release the energy it contains)

Converts food into cellulose

Stores food for later plant use

When you eat plants you are eating the stored food
