  • 2. Elizabeth faced many challenges
    • Religious Problem
    • problem: England was divided among Catholics and Protestants.
    • cause: Henry VIII, when he broke with the Church and proclaimed the Act of Supremacy
    • Solution: Elizabeth created the State Church for Catholics and Protestants.
    In the late 1500’s Elizabeth faced grave challenges from four direction at once.
  • 3. Rival Queen, Mary Stuart
    • a. problem: Mary Stuart plotted to kill Elizabeth
    • b. cause: Mary Stuart wanted to rule England as well as Scotland as a queen.
    • c. Mary Stuart was beheaded.
  • 4. Philip II of Spain
    • a. problem: War between England and Spain
    • b. cause: Elizabeth refused Philip’s petition to marry him. Mary Stuart’s execution.
    • c. solution: Elizabeth encouraged the English “Sea dogs” to help her defeating the Spanish Armada.
  • 5.
    • a. problem: Elizabeth didn’t have enough money to face future wars.
    • b. cause: Ancient wars, the Parliament refused her petition to increase taxes.
    • c. solution: Elizabeth encouraged the creation of the joint-stock companies. She also reduced soldier’s salaries.
