MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) is an international
literature database of life sciences and biomedical information. Medline holds 17,000,000
records from more than 5,000 journals published in the United States and more than 80 other
countries primarily from 1950 onwards. Compiled by the U.S. National Library of Medicine
OLDMEDLINE for pre-1966 citations.
IN-PROCESS CITATIONS which provide a record for an article before it is indexed with MeSH
and added to MEDLINE or converted to out-of-scope status. Citations that precede the date
that a journal was selected for MEDLINE indexing (when supplied electronically by the

PMC contains over half a million articles, most of which have a corresponding entry
in PubMed. Articles published prior to 1966 (and added to PMC via the
Back Issue Digitization project) generally will be in PMC for several months before
appearing in PubMed.
