    • 3. Where are We Heading?  Libraries are changing rapidly from traditional “book spaces” into collaborative user-centered spaces.  Library Services must become more than just reference assistance. We are no longer “Gatekeepers”.  Services must change to meet the needs of students
    • 4. What do CMU Students Want?  Group study space  82% chose group study space over collection space  More computers  73% chose “more workstations” over collections  More comfortable seating (lounge areas)  56% ranked lounge seating 1st or 2nd choice  More electronic resources  Instruction (formal or informal)  More opportunities for social interaction (on or offline)
    • 5. How is Smiley Library Changing?  Info Commons!  Libraries are evolving away from “buildings full of books”  Bright, open spaces with access to technology and collaborative space  Less emphasis on print collections  Increased access to creative technology  Access to special programming,
    • 6. Information Commons: What’s Inside?  What’s Included?  PC Pods  Collaborative Spaces  Study Rooms  Electronic Classroom  Lounge areas  Methodist Reading Room  Education Center  Books!
    • 7. How is the Library Changing? Services:  Catalogs  Amazonization  Overlays  Guided Tutorials  Library Blog and Facebook  Visual Searching  Browse a database  DVD Collection
    • 8. How can these changes help students?  Renovations provide increased access to technology  Easier searching, one stop shop  Familiar Interfaces  Collaborative Group spaces  Resources for all, despite location
    • 9. Services for Science Majors  Databases  Ebsco  SciFinder Scholar  Visual Searching  Homework Assistance  Pathfinders  Tutorials
