BRECKNO CK BUL L ETIN M ay 2011Finding their passions Mar k Your Calendar s!This  year  at  Brecknock,  many  of  our  students  have  been  involved  in  learning  ac9vi9es  sparked  by  their  interests  and  passions.  For  example,  Mrs.   Early DismissalMcCabe’s  class  set  out  to  change  the  world  this   Mon.,  May  2,  12:30  PMyear,  and  change  they  did!  Their  service  project  of   Teacher  in-­‐servicecrea9ng  pins  brought  in  over  $600  so  far  for  the  relief  efforts  for  Hai9  and  Japan!  We  are  so  proud  of  their  accomplishments!  I  see  more  examples  of   4 th Grade Concertstudent-­‐centered  learning  whenever  I  visit  a   Thurs.,  May  26classroom  and  witness  students  researching  a   2  PM  &  7  PMtopic  of  interest,  presen9ng  ideas  to  the  class  in  an  original  way,  and  naviga9ng  their  way  through  a  rich  curriculum  in  a  manner  in  which  they  choose.   Memorial DayWe  want  students  to  own  their  learning.  It  is   Mon.,  May  30important  that  they  do  so,  to  connect  the  content   No  School  for  Studentsexplored  to  their  lives  in  authen9c  ways.  As  a  parent,  you  have  the  great  opportunity  to   Field Dayhelp  students  find  and  engage  their  passions.  Talk   Tues.,  May  31with  your  child  about  what  he  is  learning,  and  how   Raindate:  Wed.,  June  1that  material  will  be  useful  in  his  real  life  experiences.  Take  note  about  which  topics  spark  your  child’s  interest,  and  help  him  pursue  learning  more  about  them.  Nurture  posi9vity  in  your  child,   6th GRade Celebration Wed.,  June  8,  2011and  communicate  with  him  that  efforts  put  into  learning  will  definitely  yield  high  reward.  Invest  in   9:30  AM  Whole-­‐school  programthe  9me  and  resources  to  help  your  child  explore   6:30  PM  Evening  ceremony  with  refreshments  his  passions.  Be  suppor9ve  of  the  interests  and   to  followac9vi9es  your  child  finds  joy  in,  and  support,  don’t  force,  devo9ng  9me  to  those  ac9vi9es/interests.    Lastly,  communicate  with  your  child’s  teacher  about  his  interests!  We  always  seek  to  learn  more   Learning is a treasure that willabout  the  special  quali9es  of  your  child!   follow its owner everywhere. Thank  you  for  your  con9nued  partnership!   ~Chinese ProverbBrecknock Elementary School * 361 School Road, Denver, PA 17517 * (717) 445-8600
