Catla history

Editor's Notes

  1. Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish librarians not invited to initial meeting. CATLA archives, Folder 7.
  2. Newland Smith noted that 5 themes emerged from that first meeting, and these concerns would be the focus of cooperative work for many years to come. At the first meeting, and paper was presented, and then responded to – more like the theological workshops at the University of Chicago. CATLA Archives folder 7.
  3. The hopes for a cooperative catalog were there at the beginning – this is something that the ACTS schools worked on extensively in 1985, 1993, other dates, but never came to fruition. However, they did share a computer? Cooperative collection development suggested in the beginning around denominational lines – this was something that ACTS maintained for many years; Ken O’Malley’s project. A union list was in fact produced in 1980; more later. Two obstacles noted that are we still face – “enough talk already” – and the need for broad institutional support; change cannot be affected by “librarians alone.” CATLA Archives, folder 7.
  4. ATS report in 1968 – Chicago identified as one of 6 metro areas that could lead the way in consortial theological education, and it was even proposed that Chicago could serve as a case study for other metro areas. 1st president of CTU, Paul Bechtold, believed that the mandate for change in theological education in the wake of Vatican II included providing ecumenical context for students, opportunities to be association with a university, and a move away from rural areas to urban contexts that could provide opportunities for contextual field education. The first ACTS organization was formed in October 1968 with seventeen theological seminary members from the Chicago area. ACTS seminars were organized in 1968, but this larger group ended up fading away; in the mid-70s it was just an annual meeting for presidents and was gone by 1980. Chicago Theological Institute (CTI) was formed in February 1968 consisting of six north side schools. A consultant was hired, who issued recommendations in February 1970 that a major cooperative venture would include a full-time director, library cooperation, and shared faculty to support advanced degree programs. These recommendations did not play out, but cross-registration did proceed, and an annual ecumenical seminar was held. Chicago Cluster of Theological Schools (CCTS) included two new seminaries in its membership, LSTC and CTU. Meetings held in the fall of 1968 included presidents and deans of CTU, CTS, LSTC and Meadville, and established an initial program of cross-registration, team-taught courses and library privileges. Dean of the U of C Div School, Jerald Brauer, was present, but they never did join CCTS or ACTS. Proposal for broader cooperation was made to ATS in July 1969, and involved Bellarmine School of Theology (later Jesuit School of Theology at Chicago), Bethany Theological Seminary, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago Theological Seminary, Divinity School of the University of Chicago, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and Meadville Theological School. The grant proposal looked at broader cooperation, along the lines of GTU; physical space sharing, more programmatic cooperation and faculty exchange or joint appointment. A consultant was hired, and presidents and deans were meeting monthly throughout 1970. Unlike the North Side cluster, the south side did follow recommendations, and hired staff, a coordinator for the cluster, Robert Flinn, whose office space was at LSTC. The first all faculties banquet was held on May 4th, 1970. In June 1970, Northern Baptist Theological Seminary was invited to join. By fall, a mimeographed Cluster catalog was produced. McCormick Seminary joined the Cluster in 1974, and moved from the north to south side in 1975. Wentz’s History of CCTS.
  5. 1st meeting in 1965 made reference to the current Union list needing to be updated. Monograph Series List distributed in 1966 – this was an ongoing project until at least 1975; not duplicated by CCTS, apparently. Met more frequently: September, November, February, May in 1966-1967 year. February 1967 meeting – wanted to invite RC seminary libraries. First meeting that included RC seminary librarians was hosted at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary on October 28 1968, one week after the first CCTS meeting was convened. 1967-68 – met October, December, February, April. 1968-1969 – October, January, May. Minutes of May 9, 1969 : “The Officers of CATL constitute the Committee on Library Resources for ACTS. Mr. Batsel requested a grant of 750.00 for the period Jan.-June 1970 for CATL. The fact that membership in CATL and ACTS is not identical was mentioned but not resolved.” The Union List of Serial Publications in Chicago-Area Protestant Theological Libraries of 1960 was proposed for the agenda at the January 1969 meeting as far as what revising it would entail. Libraries were already participating in ILA union list, but people still wanted a revision. 1969-1970 – met December, ? 1970 – met Feburary, April and June – File 8. ATLA’s Oliver checklist from the 1968 Proceedings was filled out by libraries. CATLA made a report of activities to the ISFU December 1969 meeting; main concerns were monograph series list, union list of periodicals, reciprocal borrowing, cooperative cataloging and collection development regionally. 1972 – April; by-laws adopted at this meeting. Recriprocal borrowing, cooperative projects, and professional development the aims. Will meet three times a year. 1972-73 – October, January, May. Bound copy of Union List of Serials was presented at May 3, 1974 meeting at Calvin by Newland Smith on behalf of committee. Meetings were held in October, January and May from about 1972 to 1975. CATLA archives, 2011-04, folder 7. This file includes an early membership list. 11 members in 1975, at least paid – Andrews, Bethany, CTU, CTS, De Andreis, Franciscan Educational Center (WI), Garrett/Seabury-Western, Jesuit, Lutheran, McCormick, Northern Baptist. Members in 1969 also included Anderson, Calvin, Church Federation of Chicago, Divine Word Seminary (Techny), Evangelical Theological Seminary (Naperville), Goshen Bibilcal Seminary, University of Chicago, Maryknoll College (Glen Ellyn), Meadville, Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Nashotah House, North Park, Provincial Depository Library (Franciscan, WI), St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, St. Xavier College, Trinity Evangelical Divinty School.
  6. Union list of serials first proposed in 1967. A committee was formed in 1969. In 1970 it was proposed that it be compiled as a database, using punch cards, and according to the new Anglo-American rules. Would include location, denomination, dates, if needed to distinguish each title. The Holdings of the libraries would be included. A machine print-out would be the final output. Wanted to complete the project in one or two years. File 8 The Oliver list was simply an opportunity to list main collection development areas: De Andreis, Nashotah, Northern Baptist, Seabury-Western. File 8 Sharing procedures was one presentation, by filling out questionnaire and bringing a manual. A CATL directory was an early project in 1970. A newsletter was proposed that could regularly give more detailed information about each library than the directory could do. Money was primarily needed for printing directories and the two serials lists. File 8 Monograph series list active from 1966 to 1975? File 8 ACTS contributed $1500 in 1970 for the work on the union list of serials. File 8 Wanted to talk to ACTS about the possibility of a group reciprocal borrowing agreement with U of C. A proposal of broader cooperation was also suggested, with all seminary libraries. June 9,, 1970. File 8 Met in March, June, 1971. Met in October, December 1970. File 8 October 1970 meeting reported on CCTS activities – the common council meets monthly, and includes a librarian, the deans, presidents and business managers. There is a full time coordinator, Robert Flynn. CCTS libraries are compiling a union list to determine overlapping titles. A directory has been made by copying information in the CATL directory. U of C is not part of the structure. File 8 Name changed from CATL to CATLA in October 1971 not clear why. File 8 BTI proposal for national Union List of Serials – CCTS was one of the clusters consulted, and the coordinator consulted with CATLA, since the CCTS librarians had not made up their minds yet about what they thought of a national list. CATLA’s list already had 7000 titles, while BTI’s was about 10000. MARC wasn’t finalized yet for serials, so CATLA wanted their list now, since it would be a few years for a national list anyway. File 8 Union list had four editors, Garrett, McCormick, St. Mary’s and CTU. List of initial participants in 1971 was 22. File 8 Reported at January 1973 meeting that CATLA was the library committee of ACTS, but now ACTS has redefined its role and will not be a funding organization, so not available for funding for CATLA projects, though they will maintaine their commitment of $1000 for the 1972-73 year for the serials list. File 8 May 1973 meeting reported that consultant for data punch card work, Ed LaShea, had not done the work, though he had been paid $4500. He had claimed that he couldn’t get computer time to compile the data with the punch cards, and then when the committee went to his home, since he wouldn’t communicate with them, he wouldn’t come to the door. CATLA thought about seeking legal action. File 8 In May 1973 Elvire Hilgert reported on the Theological Library program at McCormick, which was a joint degree in Library Science and Theology with Rosary and the U of C. File 8 September 1973 executive committee meeting voted to proceed with the union list manually, as they had originally thought they would do, since the problem with Ed LeShea was unresolved. File 8 October 1973 CATLA meeting – camera ready copy was typed by secretaries at Garrett, Seabury St. Mary’s and McCormick so that the union list could proceed. Printing and mailing costs would hopefully be covered by sales of the union list. Decided not to pursue legal action, per consultation with ACTS, or lack thereof. File 8 Al Hurd of CCTS had some concerns regarding the union list, which were address extensively by a report of the executive committee in December 1973. He still had major concerns over the constitutionality of the vote to proceed, and made big deal out of it, even though the vote was to print the list, rather than waste three years of effort, and was still approved by the institutional members. The list was completed in 1974 and printing arranged by McCormick, which expected to recoup the costs by sales of the list. File 8 A long range planning committee was assigned at the Oct 1975 meeting to investigate the frequency nature of meetings and the purpose of the organization. CATLA Archives, 2011-04, File 8.
  7. New AATS standards addressed in the January 1972 Meeting. Individual degree programs would be accredited, not just the entire school, and cooperation was expected and assumed as part of the standards. File 8 At October 1973 meeting Al Hurd commented on CCTS experience with efforts at a cooperative acquisition plan, and the difficulty in getting faculty support; it was implied that CATLA would have similar difficulties. CATLA archives, 2011-04, File 8.
  8. File 9 CATLA 1985 newsletter – details on ACTS union list and monographs list, who were also participating in SILO; report on CTU as one of the 28 libraries in LCS, now I-Share. Newsletter continued from 1984 until 1994 at least. File 9 1987 was the year of the ATLA conspectus project. Online catalogs for different libraries was in the news for CATLA. File 9 A new CATLA union list on microfiche was expected in 1988. Then, in 1988, they missed the deadline for OCLC’’s union list. However, a CATLA union list on microfiche did in fact come out – not many copies sold, 26; Bethany TS handled the ordering of the fiche and was advanced the money, which was paid to OCLC. File 9 Updates on technology important – searching databases in 1991, searching FirstSearch in 1992, searching ATLA on CD-ROM in 1994, and Wheaton gets Internet access in 1993. File 9 File 6 has more detail on OCLC union list from 1986-1987, and some survey information about who was in which union list project. While the union list was avaiable online, not easy to use – remember it used to cost money to search online – so that was why printing out the list on microfile was warranted. However, unique titles were most likely not to be in OCLC – needed to be cataloged first, and LDRs added, which could be added even if you weren’t a member. Spring 1987 presentation “Religion Converted to Microformat by Robert Markham in this folder. Spring 1986 meeting in Debuque focused on ATLAs North American theological Inventory, based on the Religion and Philosophy seftion of the RLG conspectuus, of which CATLA was a pilot project. It was suggested at this meeting that CATLA could be a pilot for a potential project by ATLA to contribute authority records to the national database. File 5 CATLA logo from before 1989? Needed to get new envelopes with the logo that year. File 5 April 1990 meeting at Spertus discussed ATLA reorg by flying in Bill Miller from Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City (ATLA board member on task force). File 5. 11. October 1979 – Newland Smith proposed an supplement to the Union List of Serials be published. ATLA was proposing a Union list, and OCLC might make automated list in future, but they wanted to publish what they had, and not wait for other projects to catch up, since they wanted the information that they had spend so much time compiling to be out there. It was completed by the October 1980 meeting, and then distributed. File 3 1979-1980 – October fall conference, and April spring conference. In April 1980, there were 28 institutional members and 61 personal members; the personal members were mostly working at institutional member locations. These conferences had a similar format to today – presentations on a topic of interest, lunch and business meeting. Sometimes the topic of interest was the conference location itself. Some conferences started a bit later, and had lunch and dinner. File 3 At the October 1980 conference, Hedda Durnbaugh, new Cluster Library Program Director, announced a forthcoming Chicago Union Catalog of Religion and Theology. It would include the holdings of nine seminaries plus the University of Chicago. There would be a supplement with the religion holdings of the Newberry.
