Tackling Balance Online Tackling Balance Online Presentation Transcript

  • Tackling Balance Online Setting the Context
  • Finding a Framework
    • Collins and Barge describe an online instructors role as pedagogical, social, managerial and technical.
    • Youngblood, Trede & diCorpo propose “setting the scene, monitoring participation, facilitating critical thinking and encouraging student collaboration” as the main roles.
  • Finding a Framework
    • An online instructor is planner, model, coach, facilitator and communicator (Heur and King 2004).
    • We had to find a conceptual framework within which to examine strategies – or, more simply, strategies for what?
  • Pennslyvania State Report
    • Authoring Strategies
    • Teaching Strategies
    • Course Improvement & Revision Strategies
    • Institutional Strategies
  • Two Strategies
    • How can these strategies make it easier for instructors to manage in high volume classes?
    • Authoring – before the course goes live.
    • Teaching - during the course.
  • Now what….
    • We wanted to explore how wikis could be used as a team project within a course.
      • Does setting up a webpage constitute a gradable assignment?
      • Is designing and populating a webpage a real learning experience for a team?
      • How difficult or easy is it to actually accomplish?
  • We wonder what will happen….
    • Will people jump in and start to write?
    • Do we have enough structure in place to encourage participation?
    • What more can we add to entice collaborative work?
    • Will people have as much fun as us?
  • What we hope will happen
    • Each team will post information about managing online teaching on their wiki page.
    • People will experiment with different layouts, colours and types of information.
    • We will all learn more about teaching on line and about how wikis work.
  • Web 2.0 Work-Life Balance
    • ENJOY !
