These nine therapeutic steps help enhance the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and spiritual domains of an individual, increasing their quality of life.
It stimulates cellular level growth, increases right and left brain functioning as well as increasing the size of the hippocampus.
These great results help in storing new memories, bringing up past events that have not been explored in a long time and in allowing individuals to PLAN, REMEMBER, SCHEDULE and BE THERE. These nine steps also help initiate conversation, keep someone occupied, explore new talents and helps someone escape from their everyday lives or events such as a death, moving, new job, marriage or even getting used to having a new baby in the house.

5 Domains within the TTAP Process:
Emotional - TTAP allows individuals to express themselves and not leave things bottled in, encourages individuals to connect with others as well as their inner selves and helps in seeking happiness
Social - TTAP initiates conversation, allows individuals to find their own identity by exploring different activities and determining what their likes and dislikes are, and it also allows to keep up with the world around you, knowing what is going on
Physical - TTAP helps carry out ADLs (activities of daily living) encouraging individuals to be more independent, enhances movement, assist in appearance, helping an individual appear and feel younger and more alive, helps ones self-esteem grow and increases an individuals interest in participating in activities

5 Domains
Cognitive - TTAP allows individuals to exercise the different parts of the brain, helps in bringing past memories into present times, the more you speak about something, the easier it will be to bring that information out the next time you need it. It also enriches the density of the hippocampus, increases right/left brain functioning and cellular level growth, connecting one thought to another.
Spiritual - TTAP Method presents things for us to believe in, allows individuals to explore their identity and have their own opinion on something, might give some a reason to live and faith that things will be better

Description of Population
The population at Rivington House consist of residents who are diagnosed with AIDs as well as other illnesses that come along with having AIDS. Other illnesses being Diabetes, HTN (Hypertention), substance abuse related, Cellulites, Hepatitis, strokes and various others. These residents are at an average age of 50, have poor socioeconomic background, poor literacy skills and are referred from city hospitals.
Commonly, these residents experience physical symptoms such as wasting which is when they lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time, myopathic pain, gain weight due to over eating or medication, fevers and skin discoloration.

60% of patients are able to leave the facility and go into the community
40% of patients stay in facility
70% of patients are men
50% of patients are African American
35% of patients are Latinos
80% of patients have a history of Substance Abuse
60% of patients have Mental Illness

3 Levels of Functioning
A) Residents admitted with a very compromised condition
B) Residents will improve and get better and be discharged to the community
C) Residents will get better, but not enough to be discharged

Session One Individual thought to group ideas
Box Paradise
This session turned out to be different than what I had expected. After having the clients meditate and think about their favorite vacation spot, I asked them to decorate their boxes as the place they saw in their vision. It turned out that most of them did not want to place anything inside the box because they wanted to use it for other things. They simply just painted the outside which in my opinion this was fine because you need to give the individual choices.

Jewelry Making
I have the residents listen to music before making jewelry.
JS along with the other residents at Rivington House love making jewelry. It is always their first pick when it comes to attending the arts and crafts sessions. JS choose an interesting collection of beads to make a bracelet. He choose burgundy see through circles along with a rectangular beige one that had the word celebrate on it. I t appears that he is a positive person.

BS is such a happy and upbeat person and it shows through her art work. Everything she makes is bright and full of life. BS appears to have a great imagination and loves things that are soothing such as the beach. After I was done with my meditation she asked me, “why do you always mention there being a gate, why cant we just go straight to the beach.”

BS seemed unsure of what to do with the clay. She asked me on more than one occasion what should she do. I told her to just play with it for a while and see what comes up. To her surprise it started looking like a little old man she said. BS went with that idea and kept adding details to it.
RM was very unique. When I asked him what inspired him to design what is shown on the right hand side picture, he simply said, “that s the kind of stuff that’s in my mind at times.”

Session Six Movement into word/poetry/stories
Poetry
JS has been writing poetry since he was young, so to him this was something that came natural. As soon as I told him what the activity was, he quickly started writing without any help. JS’s poem says the following;
Peace, Upon receiving this manuscript of divine wisdom, I hope that you are in the best of health, mentally, physically and spiritually. In the following lines I shall express to you nothing but truth. I wish you to accept these words I speak as the earth accepts the life going rays of the sun.

Session Five Sculpture into movement
Wii Just Dance
I found it interesting that only the males wanted to participate in this activity. The females were not as willing. JS who played for fun stated that this would be great for any one who wanted to lose weight because it makes you sweat right away. Even though the game goes at a quick pace, JS took his time and did the best he could with out over doing it.
RM on the other hand took it to a more competitive level. He tried his best to get the highest score possible.

Cookie Decorating
RM was excited to decorate the Christmas cookies. Christmas is important to him and his family. RM appeared to enjoy decorating and eating the cookies equally. As soon as he decorated one he quickly ate it and began with the next one. RM was also interested in saving his girlfriend some to decorate. He appears to have her best interest in hand.

ED appeared to enjoy every minute of it. After the meditation was over she said that she was able to really get into it because she had done something similar using the television. When I asked her whether it was better in person she quickly answered yes. ED also shared that she had seen her mother and her standing in their old garden during the meditation.
BS shared with the group that she had pictured Jones Beach during the meditation.

Christmas Art
BS was so happy with the angel bobble head I gave her. She kept telling me how cute she was. It was interesting how she decorated her angel. Instead of painting it like the rest did, she added glitter on the wings, the halo and the dress.
RM appeared to be frustrated with the activity. At one point he said, “Its so hard to stay in the line, if I mess up I rather start over with a new one.” But besides how difficult it was to him he never gave up and continued working on it.

The graph shown on the next page represents the amount of time residents’ spent in each activity. It has been proven through research that the more time in programming the brain is stimulated. The numbers on the bottom represent the sessions in order of one to nine and the numbers on the left hand side represent the amount of time spent in each session.

Summary of Session Evaluations
The following questions were asked individually to the residents after each session. The residents were asked to rate these questions on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being the highest, best or most and 1 being the least, lowest or worst). The graph shown on the right hand side represents the average score for each question, using nine surveys. The numbers on the bottom represent the questions in order of one to ten, and the numbers on the left hand side represent the scores. The higher the number is the higher the average score was for each question.

TR Effect on HIV/AIDS Population
Therapeutic Recreation is crucially important when working with any type of population, in particularly HIV/AIDS patients. Several of these patients along with having HIV/AIDS, struggle with drug addictions, drug addictions that in most cases start at a young age and triggered by bad influences such as family or friends or stress and depression.
Therapeutic Recreation assists in helping people divert their attention from their illnesses or problems to something that’s positive and enjoyable. Additionally, the TTAP Method has been proven to stimulate the brain and social behaviors which was witnessed during this 9 week programming.
Participating in recreational activities allows the individual to experience “Flow”- blocking out thought, feelings or worries not having to do with the activity that is being done at the moment. When introducing a new activity to someone, there is a chance that the person might find it really enjoyable and end up wanting to repeat it on their own time.

TR Effect on HIV/AIDS Population
Therapeutic Recreation also helps in keeping these patients busy and out of trouble. People struggling with drug addictions need a lot of encouragement and introduction to positive leisure activities such as drawing, painting, sculpting or playing sports because they are used to spending all their free time mistreating their bodies by in taking different drug substances.
Therapeutic Recreation is effective in helping people socialize more. It gives people the chance to meet others that are going through similar situations. Through socializing people get a chance to express their feelings instead of having everything bottled in, and it lets them know that they are not alone on this. Socializing helps in learning. People learn by others, by doing things and from the environment.

Therapeutic Recreation Effects on HIV/AIDS Population
Therapeutic Recreation also provides people with a support group that makes them feel better about themselves and makes them feel cared for and loved. This is extremely important for this population because many of them grew up with either abusive families or no families at all.
