Mapping the road for sustainable climate FORTIUS 2009 - Presentation Transcript
Output from panel discussion hosted by AIESEC Denmark
“Mapping the road for a sustainable climate and prosperity for renewable energy companies”
The following document contains the compiled recommendations and solutions created by AIESEC
members and alumni following a panel discussion with Monday Morning, Novozymes, Rambøll Danmark
and Energy Crossroads on Saturday 18th April 2009. We hope that the generated ideas can serve as
inspiration and maybe new projects or business ideas.
Politicians
1. Begin subsidizing the consumption for business to business this creates low costs for businesses
which are transformed to the consumers.
2. If for public transportation the fuel is subsidized this transforms into lower costs of tickets for the
consumers. If this is working it can be promoted as a positive example.
3. Green taxis are needed this needs to be communicated to the manufacturers and other businesses.
Youth/Student organizations
1. Closer cooperation between the student organizations is needed in order to increase the pressure
on companies to be more aware of the environment.
2. Create an event that can be organized all over the world where young people can discuss the
climate change. The event should focus on spreading awareness, knowledge and possible solutions
to climate change.
3. Approach the Ministry of Education to lobby for the inclusion of climate life and climate change in
the curriculum in primary schools.
Non Government Organizations
1. Build image and status around using green transportation by educating and informing the
environmentally conscious consumer. Have for instance IKEA brand themselves as a company that
uses 50% bio fuel and make it a marketing initiative by marking the products and using the media
to convey the message.
2. Get subsidies from the government for using the “greener solutions” Give the incentives that are
currently lacking, and support the companies that are doing something extra.
3. Create an innovation forum to search for better and more environmentally friendly solutions in the
actual transportation, packaging etc.
Consumers
1. Impose no or minimum taxes on bio fuel and larger taxes on ordinary fuel in order to make the
price of bio‐fuel competitive.
2. Launch a PR campaign to increase the awareness of climate changes through the educational
systems and let the students play “changing the game” developed by Energy Crossroads.
3. Let government set an example through the use of public transportation and cars that run on bio
fuels.
Scientists/Universities
1. Scientists from different departments work together on a project. They interact and in this way the
research will be done from different viewpoints.
2. Students are given the opportunity to win a Nobel Prize in climate preservation.
3. Create and event for students with the climate and environment as a theme. Every participant has
to wear green clothes to promote a green world.
Environmental Movements
1. Engage in cooperation and branding of environmentally sustainable solutions for instance by
making a boar that can run on bio fuel and then sail it to India. This will create awareness of the
climate issue and also plant a seed in people’s minds that even ships running on bio fuel will be
viable in the future.
2. Support the educational sector and scientists by developing and testing new technologies.
Companies
1. Create a nation‐wide competition around climate innovation. Rambøll as an independent
foundation will then be in a position to judge the solution. The competition can help create
awareness in the public.
2. Create a ridged quality measurement tool and certificate such as the smileys are used for hygiene.
It should be simple and rigorous and enforced by a third party auditing company enforcing control.
3. Create a blue‐print book for climate sustainability targeted for different company sizes and types.
The book should contain concrete examples of achievements and best practices but also concrete
numbers.
Specific initiatives for Energy Crossroads:
Simplify the game and use the internet to make an online version.
Change the game into something commercial and use television to make a TV program with well known
Danish people. (e.g. politicians) participating and maybe also people from different levels of society.
To trigger awareness and curiosity, turn the game into a competition that is communicated through a
newspaper or magazine. For this also a simplified version of the game is needed.
Make companies use the game as a strategic tool to plan their energy portfolio i.e. Shell or Dong Energy.
