  • 2. What is Audio Codec? Audio Codec is a device or program that compress and decompress digital audio data According to given audio file format. The term codec is a combination of coder-decoder. The object of a codec formula is to represent the high fidelity audio signal with minimum Number of bits while retaining the quality. This can effectively reduce storage space. Most codec are implemented as libraries, such as Window media, XMMS, and Winamp.
  • 3. The difference with lossless and lossy audio compression
    • Lossy audio compression
    • Lossy Audio compression is used
    • in an wide range of application.
    • Direct application such as mp3 and
    • computers use lossy audio
    • compression. Digitally compressed
    • audio streams are used in most
    • video DVDs, digital television,
    • media on the internet, satellite ,
    • and cable radio.
    • Lossless Audio Compression
    • Lossless audio compression is
    • primary used by audio engineers,
    • audiophiles, and consumers who
    • want to save there exact copy of their
    • audio files. File storage and
    • communications bandwidth have
    • become less expensive and more
    • available.
  • 4. Free and open file formats
    • WAV- standard audio file used in Windows PCs. It is used for storing uncompressed
    • PCM, such as CD quality sound files.
    • MPC- is an open source lossy audio, specifically used for transparent stereo audio.
    • MPC is rated one of the best available codecs for high quality lossy audio.
    • FLAC- a lossless compression codec. If you compress a PCM file to flac and then
    • restore it again it will be a perfect copy of the original.
    • AIFF- this audio file format is used by apple. It is a wav file for Mac.
    • AU- the standard audio file format used by Sun, Unix, and Java.
