Over 100 students (first-year BDes Graphics) produced books forthe iBooks library on iPhone/iPads. Students could check theirebooks on their smart phones.Student Feedback was excellent overall, and project seen as goodindustry preparation “I have learnt so much. The interactive PDF for the Bookworkswas a challenge but I did it and have submitted. It is such anawesome tool to have learnt for the future. First year of Uni over, looking forward to the break but also looking forward to comingback! “ (KR)55 of 89 students giving (SEPS) paper feedback wanted tocontinue the digital literacy initiative with iPads/mobiletechnologies in the second year. More students are likely to havesmart phones as each year passes.

Objectives of the Project• Industry-prepared graduates: Graphics Designers are now being expected to design for hardcopy print but also provide an EPUB component. Our students will need to be able to design for e-reader format by the time they graduate• iFlaneur: discover tangential advantages of ipads in teaching and research: spontaneous video or sound recording device for creative projects, lectures, notetaking, cloud access, accessing online resources, QR code finding, social media engagement etc.• Explore apps for teaching/ and in research Introducing epublication component [ipad/iphones] in traditional bookarts, artists books, and contextual studies.
Specific Objectives of the ProjectPilot use of ipads/iphones in BDes [Graphics] papers [LK]1] Elective project 11: Bookbinding for limited editionpublications. [20x BDes Graphics students, year 2 ]2] HCC1– Issues Theory and Formats [21st CenturyBookworks]. [137x BDes Graphics students, year 1]Assessed Output – hardcopy bookwork and epublicationfor iPad/smart phone3] Creative Process – individual student interests
Space savingStudent e-pubs available to view in iBooks library on ipad.
Hardcopy bookwork displayed in glass cabinets – can’t be read
Bookwork able to be read and critiqued on screen

22 July 2012 updateCANVAS students inspired and enthused by old andnew book technologies in bindery [Professor Welby Ings]• This research will be the basis of a paper on combining old and new technologies in tertiary education• Other Graphics staff in the iPad GD CoP latent grant group are doing very interesting iPad initiatives this year. See individual reports at gdcop.wordpress GD Community of Practice.webloc
Capital equipment / investment:• iPads needed. Currently no ipads available in the school for students to book out for trials or exhibition. Funding for equipment needed [Faculty level directives]. Staff unable to get ipad/iphones and support equipment (enclosues, wide screens, kiosks, Lynda.com tuts etc.) on IDP funds or Capex (NOTE: capex previously funded class sets of wacom tablets etc. but faculty clampdown leaves some of those at the teaching interface iPadless)• Wireless networks in some buildings needs significant upgrade• UPDATE: iPad Kiosk ordered to trial possibilities etc. [thanks CfLAT]
Planning for Future: Majors and Minors• Need for building EPUB and social media components into degree in order to meet changing graduate profile.• Staff with technical computer expertise in epublication are needed to develop the area
• Combine old and new technologies in the book bindery• Long term objective is to further integrate new technology such as Ipads/iphones, in delivering content for BDes Graphics papers, and in research.• Interest in exploring epub formats and expanding Issues, theory and formats [21st Century Bookworks] brief.• Look at developing Book Arts major and/or Publishing minor - a book lab of convergent media.
ABSTRACT [Draft sent 6 December]: Lesley Kaiser for TEXT journal, Oct 2013Shape-shifting: traditional book arts and 21st century multi-modal bookformats in tertiary teachingAbstract: Our relationship to books, both as objects and as texts, is mutatingdramatically. This paper explores how old and new technologies might beutilised in the bindery for the creation of multi-modal books that combinethe most prized aspects of printed limited edition or one-off hand-madebooks with the enhanced communication and reading potential of ebooks.Pilot projects were set in the first and second year of a BDes (Graphics)programme. Emerging theoretical contexts informed research into 21stcentury issues, theory and formats, and students presented their findings asbeautifully designed bookworks that utilised both text and image. They werealso required/invited to design the content as an interactive PDF or EPUB tobe read in an iBooks library on an iPad/iPhone. This is a strategicallyimportant direction in tertiary design education, as book production needsto be guided by sound aesthetic and design principles as the book morphsinto the future. Students were empowered with a multi-modal fluency thatprepares them for their future professional and personal lives as designersand creators.
