Graphic Design and 21st Century Bookworks: Implementing multimodal
strategies to complement traditional book formats. The aim of this project is to enhance digital literacy and integrate mobile technologies into the Graphic Design courses at AUT University. Traditionally these courses have involved designing books for print, and binding books by hand. This project explores how old and new technologies might be utilised in the creation of multimodal books that combine the best aspects of printed limited edition and handmade books with the enhanced communication and reading potential of epublications.

    36. 36. STUDENT FEEDBACK: Student Feedback was excellent overall, andproject seen as good industry preparation“I have learnt so much. The interactive PDF for the Bookworkswas a challenge but I did it and have submitted. It is such anawesome tool to have learnt for the future. First year of Uniover, looking forward to the break but also looking forward tocoming back! “ (KR)Over 100 students (first-year BDes Graphics) produced books forthe iBooks library on iPhone/iPads. Students could check theirebooks on their smart phones. 55 of 89 students giving (SEPS)paper feedback wanted to continue the digital literacy initiativewith iPads/mobile technologies in the second year. More studentsare likely to have iPads/smart phones as each year passes.

    41. 41. Shape-shifting: traditional book arts and 21st century multimodal bookworksABSTRACT [Draft] : Lesley Kaiser for TEXT journal, Oct 2013Our relationship to books is mutating dramatically, not just for readers andwriters, but also for those who design and produce books. This research exploreshow old and new technologies might be utilised in the creation of multimodalbooks that combine prized aspects of printed hand-bound books with theenhanced communication and reading potential of e-publications. A bookworkproject was set in the first year of the Bachelor of Design (Graphics) programmeat AUT University. Emerging theoretical contexts informed research into currentissues, theory and formats, and students presented their findings as well-designed bookworks utilising both text and image. For assessment, they wererequired to design the content for both print and to be read on an iPad/iPhoneas an interactive PDF or EPUB. Recorded lectures and other online resourcesresulted in deeper student engagement with both physical and digital spaces. The traditional bindery was digitally enhanced to create a space for cyberlearning in a practical workshop. Students were empowered with increaseddigital literacy and a multimodal fluency that prepares them for their futureprofessional and personal lives as designers and creators. This is an importantdirection in design education as the book morphs into the future.See: http://lesleykaiser.wordpress.com

    45. 45. Ongoing Objectives of the Project• Industry-prepared graduates: Graphics Designers are nowbeing expected to design for hardcopy print but also providean e-publishing component. Our students will need to be ableto design for iPad/e-reader format by the time they graduate• iFlaneur: discover tangential advantages of ipads in teachingand research: spontaneous video or sound recording devicefor creative projects, lectures, notetaking, cloud access, accessing online resources, QR code finding, social mediaengagement etc.• Explore apps for teaching/ and in researchIntroducing epublication component [ipad/iphones] intraditional bookarts, artists books, and contextual studies.
    46. 46. Curricuum developmentPlanning for Future• Need for building e-publishing and social mediacomponents into degree in order to meet changinggraduate profile.• Booklab concept: exploration of liminal space betweenprint and digital publishing• Staff need technical computer expertise in e-publicationto develop the area
