The PHD research, hereafter described, consists in finding answers for the following research problem:

What principles, at both the graphic and interaction levels, should IPTV applications' Interface Design (Internet Protocol Television) follow, so that their interfaces are better suited to the special requirements of Portuguese senior users?

  1. 1. .Completed research tasksTo answer the research problem, above described ,we have already carried out the study of the limitationsimposed to IPTV´s Interface Design by the: • IPTV Middleware software - interface authoring limitations; • Hardware - STB memory and data processing limitations; • medium that visually displays the graphic interface to the user - the TV set; • typical TV broadcast graphic elements.In order to complement the research work above described and its findings, this PHD research was integratedinto the iNeighbour TVs Research & Development project. This integration and collaboration resulted in twospecific tasks that have, also, been carried out: • The iNeighbour TVs interface general graphics and menu iconographys design improvement. • Collaboration with the iNeighbour TVs app Field Trial, were some elements/components of the graphical and interactive user interface, were tested with a sample of portuguese seniors.Results & FindingsIt is not possible, for now, to announce our research final results, because the literature review collected data andthe comparison between the data already collected regarding: • IPTV Middleware software - interface authoring limitations; • Hardware - STB memory and data processing limitations; • medium that visually displays the graphic interface to the user - the TV set; • typical TV broadcast graphic elements; • and the iNeighbour TVs Field Trial findings and observations...... havent yet been compared and interpreted.But we can now, in general terms, state and confirm our initial suspicions, that IPTV software and hardware, dueto the limited/locked interface customization/authoring features ofered by some IPTV middleware platforms suchas Microsoft MediaRoom - the most adopted platform worldwide -, combined with STB limited memory and dataprocessing capabilities, might pose serious limitations and restrictions to the interfaces design. We can also stateand confirm that both the medium - the tv set - and TV broadcast graphic elements, also impose Designrestrictions to the interface. However, if these limitations conflict, or not, with literature recommendations and FieldTrial findings, that is yet to be compared and confirmed.Next tasks • Analyse and interpret the collected Field Trial data; • Compare and identify conflicts, if aplicable, between suggested recommendations or limitations from: o The senior digital interface design literature recommendations; o The iNeighbour TV Field Trial findings and results; o IPTV Middleware software - namely the MediaRoom platform limitations; o Hardware - STB memory and data processing limitations; o The medium that visually displays the graphic interface to the user - the TV set; o The typical TV broadcast graphic elements.
