  4. 4. Valentine’s Day - February 14 On Valentine’s Day children and adults send or give cards, gifts, flowers, and candy to their family and friends. It is a wonderful, fun, loving, and caring day. It is a very special time to tell those around you how much you care about them. Valentine’s Day falls on February 14th. Children can’t wait to go to school or see their friends exchange that special valentine card. They make special boxes and holders to put their cards in for safe keeping. Many children make cards and gifts for older people who are lonely or in care centers. One day children in a first grade class took a very large roll of pink paper. The teacher told them they could draw Valentine pictures anywhere on the paper. The children were all excited. They worked and colored for three days whenever they had free time. When they finished, it was beautiful! The children were happy. They took it to share with the older people in the care center. The care center used the pink roll of paper as a tablecloth. Many treats were placed on it. When the older people came in they were surprised. They told the children that they were very kind. They all sat down and began to eat the treats. The first graders were happy because they made others happy that day. Try to think of someone you can make happy on Valentine’s Day. Make them feel special. Draw a picture of what you would have drawn on the pink roll of paper. Copyright@ 2014 Comp Ed, Inc. - SchoolExpress 1
  5. 5. Valentine’s Day - February 14 Valentine’s Day is one of the favorite and oldest holidays we celebrate. Legend has it that Valentine’s Day was named for a Christian priest who was put in jail many, many years ago. He was jailed around A.D. 270. He was a very kind person who helped many people. He would marry couples secretly against the Emperor’s wishes. The Emperor thought all young men should be soldiers. The Emperor had Valentine put in jail. The Emperor wanted Valentine to be put to death. Valentine had become friends with the jailer’s daughter who was blind. Before he died, he gave her a card. He signed it, “From your Valentine.” This is one of the reasons Valentine’s Day is associated with love and courtship. The legend of St. Valentine is given to two legendary martyrs. One was a priest the other was a Bishop martyred in Rome. Many people believe it was the same person. Use complete sentences to answer the questions below. 1. Some of the symbols used on Valentines are: hearts, cupids, birds, flowers, harps, and bows and arrows. Hearts are a symbol of love. Many cards have hearts drawn on them. 7. 7. Valentine’s Day - February 14 People made valentines by hand for many years. They did not have printing presses. In the 1800’s, valentines were made using printing presses and were put in stores. Today, people buy valentines and send them to friends all over the world. They have messages with sentimental verses, funny sayings and pretty pictures. Valentine’s Day is celebrated all over the world but mostly in the United States, Western Europe and Canada. The first valentine sent in the United States was said to be by Miss Esther Howland. Make a list of some of your friends you will send a Valentine.
