Battle of Saratoga (Sept 1777)  “Turning Point in the War”  Burgoyne’s plan is a failure – Burgoyne and St. Ledger were behind schedule (too slow) – Thanks to Ethan Allen & GMB – Howe won’t show up – He loves Philadelphia  Continentals led by Gen Horatio Gates defeat Burgoyne at Saratoga  Convinced French to Support Americans and come to our aid in the war (FRANKLIN, MA)
  8. 8. Philadelphia (1777-1778)  Sept 1777- Americans defeated @ Brandywine (C.C. must flee to Baltimore)  Paoli Massacre  Oct 1777- Americans, reinforced by French defeat British at Germantown

Low point for Americans (no supplies or food)  With help of (Friedrich von Steuben and Marquis de Lafayette) American’s new trained army able to hold off and force retreated in Monmouth, NJ  10,000 men enter camp  2,000 die  Valley Forge
