  • Late 20th influence of the media BND Sport
  • The 4 sports to become professional first are:
    • Rugby
    • Cricket
    • Football
    • Athletics
  • There are more expenses in sport because:
    • The athletes had given up their other jobs and …
    • They had taken the sport up as a job so they were being paid.
  • More money came into sport in several ways:
    • Sponsorship
    • Spectators
    • Food
    • Media
    • Lottery funding – Scholarships
    • Private company’s investing to make more money
  • As sport became professional and more money injected, it meant:
    • More spectators
    • Even more money
    • And initially a conflict between upper and lower classes.
    • This was because the upper class thought that sport should be played purely for the enjoyment and not to earn money.
  • Media got involved because
    • They thought that it was a quick way to make money.
    • This was because a lot more people were becoming interested in the sports
