Powerpoint Surgery - the new book that kills death by powerpoint - here in just 20 slides!

  1. 1. 5 years of research into great slides = my book ‘PowerPoint Surgery’. This is my book in 20 slides…
  2. 2. Text heavy slide warning(!) ! Ironically the way that Slideshare works bests is to upload slides without video or audio. This means that slides about good slides end up being text heavy! If I was to present these slides live they’d have hardly any words on them. Oh, the irony :)
  3. 3. There’s nothing new about using slides, the problem is that it’s now too easy to create bad ones…
  4. 4. …and when we do bad slides we blame our software! Don't blame us!
  5. 5. great slides in a nutshell
  6. 6. First of all. Stop! Always ask yourself - do I need slides?
  7. 7. YOU ARE A DESIGNER! < whether you like it or not this is true!
  8. 8. Think billboard not document… …remember this little phrase and it will change the way you design slides forever!
  9. 9. Design your slides for this person and remember the 3 second rule …if you can’t read it in 3 seconds its too complicated!
  10. 10. It’s not the 90’s anymore so please stop using clipart and cheesy stock photos!
  11. 11. Use lots of images. Start to collect your own. Photo: © Alfred Eisenstaedt/LIFE
  12. 12. Let your images breathe.
  13. 13. © Lee Jackson 2013 Presentation title Event title www.leejackson.biz Don't crowd images with dull corporate templates. Todays date lee@leejackson.biz lee@leejackson.org My logo www.leejackson.biz
  14. 14. bullets kill people and presentations! It’s not death-by-powerpoint it’s death-by-bulletpoint.
  15. 15. Boring title • • • 1. Bullet point • • • 4. I’m starting to feel sleepy • 7. I’ve forgotten my name, I want to go home and sit in a darkened room 2. Next bullet point 3. I’m playing a game on my iPhone 5. Can I leave the room please? 6. I’m losing the will to live here
  16. 16. Even simple speech bubbles make better bullets, but they are still not great Point 1 Point 3 Point 2 Point 4 Point 5
  17. 17. • • • • DO NOT USE LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG animations or transitions either… Its only dressing up bulletpoints anyway.
  18. 18. Don't use animated gifs and cartoons, because, if the screen is moving in the background they won’t look at you (and that is a bad thing!)
  19. 19. Cognitive load theory… …states that our short-term memory is limited. So, people can either listen to you or read complex slides. Not both.
  20. 20. Complex data can be presented simply. Our job as speakers is to crunch the numbers for our audience. Keep it simple like Asda did here in their recent TV ad. ! !
  21. 21. And lastly don't hide behind your slides! A great presentation is about you and your story. Be 100% you, then add 25%.
  22. 22. Praise for ‘Powerpoint Surgery’
