After the success of the Water Council, we looked around the region to see what other opportunities existed based on existing assets.MiKE is an economic development cluster initiative that is developing new approaches to innovation. Structured similar to the Water Council, MiKE is focused on design technology. So, why are we focusing on innovation in Milwaukee?
So, how does MiKE work? I want to share just one story with you today. It’s one of many wins I’ve seen with MiKE in the past few months and shows the circle of connections. BJ Gaddour is a young entrepreneur who moved back to Milwaukee after graduating from Amherst College with a degree in economics and sociology. He found he wanted nothing to do with either career path and started to explore entrepreneurship. He had been writing regularly for Men’s Health and wanted to expand his passion for fitness to create a business. With a very small budget and only 90 days, BJ was able to connect to the MiKE network and create a first of its kind, online fitness company called StreamFIT.
There are a lot of reasons why companies are interested in MiKE.Talent - Innovation, IT area, design StartupsInexpensive innovationPeople want a different type of work environmentChanges corporate cultureAttracts creative talent very inexpensively, needing more talent, 9 out of 10 fail Other companies are doing this too. Many corporations are making this kind of investmentEducation - Having direct connections to professors and researches within the university is critical, however it can take a lot of resources to build that network from scratch. Through MiKE, the GMC and the Talent Dividend we are able to connect into an already existing network. For example, some of my R&D staff sat down with MiKE and explained our need for Radio Frequency research and talent. We didn’t know the full extent of what existed locally. Within a few days, MiKE provided the contact information for two professors at UWM, allowing my staff to have direct access to talent and research opportunities that did not exist before.
If you’re intrigued by MiKE and want to learn more, I encourage you to attend our upcoming MiKE Council Meeting on May 14.We’d also be open to meeting with you individually about MiKE and how you might get connected.Questions?
StreamFIT is like the NetFlix for fitness. It allows you to stream personalized workouts from any device. It’s innovative, not because everyone has an iphone or ipad or laptop, but because it delivers a totally new human experience.Let’s say you wake up planning to go to the gym, you check your email from your phone and discover your plans must change. StreamFIT creates a new world where that’s no long an inconvenience to your schedule. You have the flexibility to have a personal trainer available anytime, from any location. StreamFIT symbolizes the power of innovation. The true innovation was seeing a world where people will have specialists at their fingertips, on demand. StreamFIT is the delivery of that new human experience. So how did MiKE help make this happen in Milwaukee?BJ received some seed funding but needed help developing the concept. Through MiKE, BJ was able to connect with a team of mentors and partners to create a go-to-market strategy.StreamFIT also found an affordable and fast design firm through MiKE to develop the technology and design of the site. The development team was a mix of professional mentors and two students. StreamFIT launched in three months and had more than 1,000 registrants within it’s first month. The two students that worked on the project used the StreamFIT as a portfolio project and have since landed fulltime positions. Finally, StreamFIT is now connected to New Balance out of Boston. They’re exploring using the platform as their corporate fitness program. And just last week BJ met with my wellness team at Kohl’s to explore how we might leverage the tool.None of these connections would have happened without MiKE. In less than six months, a young graduate has a game-changing startup that is based here. And, Kohls and other corporations have a new wellness platform that is low cost and requires little infrastructure. The StreamFIT story is just one example of a MiKE win. We’re finding new ways for universities to partner with corporations on research. We’re connecting companies up with interns and the talent they need. We’re building the resource network to make it easier and more attractive for startups to stay and move here. [CLICKING FORWARD WILL PLAY VIDEO]
