Old spice have used very clevermarketing tools to ensure they getthe customer base that they need, they have clearly started trying totarget a fairly young age whichprobably ranges from 24 – 55.Theyhave also started trying to targetother ethnic groups they have donethis so that they can target more thanjust one target group. I think old spicehave started putting men on theirbranding thinking that the women aregoing to buy it for someone male whothey know.Hackett have started totarget the oldergentlemen this clearlyshows in their clothingrange however due totheir lack of fragrances it ishard to tell whether theyare trying to the sameolder gentlemen as shownin their clothing. They havea clothing range forchildren this suggests thatthey may have fragrancesfor children aged 16+ andfragrances for the oldergentlemen 26+.
Fish have a very strangebranding technique as theytry to target stylists whoare in their own businessusing the products andthey have also createdproducts meant for peopleage d 18+.Fish has aconfusing brand as many oftheir products and theirmain salon is based aroundblue, They have thenproduced products withred packaging and redbottles which drifts awayfrom their actual brand.Mr.Natty have tried andsucceeded when trying totarget an audience theyhave made it clear that theyare starting to target theold gentlemen aged35+.The have producedproducts that only an oldergentlemen would use. Theyhave a very straightforward marketingtechnique using plain andsimple colours and usingthe old fashioned woodmaking the brand look verystylish.
Lynx have a targetaudience of 13 to 18year olds. Their brand isconsidered as a cheapfragrance that is justused for a smell. Thebrand is too cheap foranyone above the ageof 18 to want it as itlasts 5 minutes anddoes not serve aspecific purpose likeantiperspirant.L’Oreal men expertserves a purpose tomen aged 30+ theyhave based all theirproducts around menstreatment andsolutions to men’sproblems. Their twoman products areantiperspirant and hairgrowth cream.
About CompanyOld spice is a n American male grooming brand that ismanufactured by Procter and Gamble. They acquired the brandfrom the Shulton company in 1990.The first old spice product wasintended for women this was first introduced in 1937 they thenproduced a product for men shortly after in 1938.Old spicedominated in the sale of men’s shaving soap and aftershave lotion.Sail ships are old spice’s trade mark. In the year 2000 theyintroduced many more products including deodorants, bodywashes and body sprays.PriceOld spice have a middle ranged price of deodorant in comparisonthe cheaper deodorant .Their retail price of cheapest deodorantstarts at £8 and can go up to £16.They have loads of different typesof aftershave which range from £18 to £40.This is a fairlyreasonable price and would allow a lot more people to afford aaftershave like this. They have some very cheap products likeantiperspirant that can start at £3 and range up to £6 this is verycheap and would appeal to many people. Why I chose this companyI have chosen old spice as I believe that there style is new and sleekand attracts a lot more people than they used to. They have startedto attract different culture’s and they have done this by introducinga new modernised version of there what was seen to be old brand. They have introduced a more stylish product that appeals to me alot more than any of the other brand’s.CustomersOld spice has had an extreme makeover changing its customerbase from the old aged men to the younger teenage generation. In 2001 old spice had become a top teen brand. They got involvedwith NASCAR racer Tony Stewart this straight away changed theinterest of old spice and they became a modern brand that wasvery appealing to teenagers. Old spice is now appealing to 18-45year olds.Reasons behind modernisationThe deodorant business grew steadily, but P&G realized it wasntdrawing in men 25 to 45, who still remembered Old Spice as a oldbrand which was for the older men. So P&G decided to skip ageneration and aim the brand at first-time deodorant users. Toreach this younger group, in 1999 P&G started handing outsamples of High Endurance to fifth-grade health classes, covering90% of the nations schools, as well as handing out "scratch-and-sniff" book covers to junior highs. This allowed them to gain theyounger population in there brand. Old spice knew by targetingthe younger generation they would make much more money.
SituationI have noticed that Old Spice have trouble getting the word out abouttheir brand. I think that Old Spice should start placing their products inmore shops and start to but their advertisements on TV.I also think theyneed to produce a wider range of products that need to be placed withinmore shops.BriefDesign a new point of sale for a male grooming company. The unit must display at least 1 product from their rangeand must clearly identify the brand. LINKS FXLogicalYou need the Brand name clearly displayed so that any passers by will be able to see straight away which brand is advertising. Without the brand being clearly displayed peoplemay mistake your product for another. It is essential that you can see the product clearly this is mainly because people may be confused if the product is not clearly displayed.Sometimes shops have point of sale units in corners which sometimes hide the product from potential customers causing the brand to lose out. Many people like to be able toSee the price clearly on the display this is so that they know how much it will cost them and is it worth paying the price for that product. If the point of sale is Positioned in eyeline it allows all the customers very likely to notice the point of sale if that means they interact with it or not. The point of sale is very effective in such a position as the customerwill be drawn straight to the point of display. The point of sale is great if positioned Near a till this is good as many people wait in queues, while they are waiting in this queue thepoint of sales that are in front of the till will attract them to it as they have nothing better to do while in the queue. If the point of sale is brightly coloured it is more likely toattract customers as it is eye catching. This will help with sales as it attracts people to the product. Interactivity is great in a point of sale as the customers will start playing withthe product and they will then know whether they like the product or not. It offers fun to the customers before purchase. Cluster free area is a essential as with a cluster freearea the product will easily be visible and no confusion will take place while looking at the product.IllogicalIf a product has the Same packaging it starts to become confusing for the customer and they then will need assistance from the employees of that shop and by that time manycustomers will be fed up and will possibly leave the shop. If there is a point of sale the product should not be the same size as it, This may put customers off as they may see theproduct as insignificant also the point of sale should not be too much bigger than the product as this can cause a problem as many people will see the display as showering theproduct and will start to distract people from the product. If a point of sale has interactive features then this is good however if it is Too interactive then customers say the flaws ofthe product and may not buy it. It will also give the customer time to see whether the product suits there needs. Trials of the product can be fatal and make people not purchase theproduct. Perfume is a great example as they supply card to spray the product on to however the card is not human skin so the product will not smell how its supposed to.NeedThe ultimate things that are needed for a good point of sale and good sales of theproduct are: The product is clearly displayed so that that the customer can seewhat they are buying. The point of sale needs to attract the attention of thecustomers if that means using bright colours or smell or sound. The point of saleneeds to be safe to all of the public to ensure no one gets hurt on the brandsproduct. The product has to have security tags on it to ensure the product is notstolen depending on the price of the product. The point of sale needs to be ableto stand out compared to other point of sales.KeepThe point of sale needs to keep the same customer base so that the targetaudience is still interested. The point of sale still needs to keep only oneindividual product on the display. The same traditional colours have to be keptas customers may get confused if changed. The same masculinity of the brandneed to be kept due to the customer base. I will keep the brands logo andname still on the front of the point of sale to ensure the customer is notconfused at what brand they are looking at. I will ensure the same target groupwill be interested in the product as well as new customers.ScrapI will scrap some of the design ideas of the company to ensure they keep the samecustomer base while luring in other customers. I will get rid of some of the boringpackaging supplied by company to try and bring a more sophisticated side to the brand.I will scrap the material of cardboard as it is boring and a poor material when trying tomake your product look expensive. I would also scrap the idea that if a product ischeaper it has less attention compared to the more expensive products.Form VS FunctionI will use materials that make the product look stylish expensive and sleek. I will notbe in favour of cheap materials such as cardboard I will focus on materials like glassand metal. The glass can be used to enclose the product making it look very stylishand exclusive. I will use interactive features making the point of sale unit stand outfrom others. I will try to make my point of sale unit in the middle allowing it to lookstylish and still be able to work to a high standard.X FactorI will make my stand different from other point of sale units as I will use lighting that willlight up the unit and the area around it. This is not featured on any point of sale unit. I willalso use an interactive screen making my unit look expensive any worth while. By doingthis I should be able to attract more customers to my chosen brand .
Initial SpecificationAestheticsThe aesthetics of my point of sale will be based on the brand Iwill do this by making the point of sale incorporate the samecolours. I will also use shapes that are featured frequentlythrough the old spice design. I will also use the same masculinestyle that old spice use. I will use the products style to try andmake my point of sale fit the brand.CostI will base the cost of my point of sale unit on the cost of my brandas it will not fit in if the sale is much more expensive than theproduct. I will be carful as I cannot make the manufacturing costof the point of sale too expensive due to the fact the products arenot too expensive. I also have to make sure the cost of recyclingthe point of sale is not too expensive.CustomerI will have to design the point of sale to suit what the customer likesand how they expect the product to be display. I will have to makesure that I make the point of sale to what the customer is actuallylooking for. I will need to ensure the point of sale is what thecustomer expects and is not completely different to what theyknow and love.EnvironmentThe environment of my point of sale will be inside or outside theshop I will be most likely to have my point of sale inside the shop andhave the point of sale positioned in the centre of the shop makingmore customers likely to notice it once they are within the shop also Iwill be carful as to which shop I place the point of sale in. I will needto find out about the style of the shops that my chosen brand isusually placed in.SafetyI will make sure my product is safe to all heights of people and will makesure there is no sharp edges and to ensure there is no tripping hazards willhave to ensure my point of sale is made out of a sensible material whichwill make it less of a hazard to people. I will need to also ensure my pointof sale is unable to be stolen as this could cause safety problems to thepublic.SizeI will need to make sure that my point of unit is of an average size toallow the customers to be able to see the product comfortably. I willneed to make sure the point of sale unit does not swamp the product onsale. I will make sure the product is of a certain size to ensure the pointof sale does not swamp the item.FunctionI will make sure the point of sale allows the customer to interact with it,allowing the customer more likely to buy it. I will possibly supply testersand freebies of the product so that the customers are sometimes morelikely to buy the product. I will make sure I don’t give out too manyfreebies otherwise the customers may not want to buy the product asthey will either not like it or they may have not want to buy the product asthey have the freebie that has been given out.MaterialThe material of my point of sale will have to be made out of a materialthat relates to my brands customers. The material of the point of salewill have to represent the price range in which my customer is willing topay for the brands product.

Key Findings• All the colours are vibrant.• Use interesting features• Try and target 18 to 35Mood BoardOn this mood board I have taken pictures that show the brand Old spicefor what it is and shows how old spice use their advertising. The picturesI have got for this mood board allow me to see more in depth of how apoint of sale of theirs would look. Customer ProfilingProcter & Gamble, the company behind the OldSpice brand, conducted consumer surveys andfound that the vast majority of male body wash isactually purchased by women. The marketingcharacter of old spice offers a stunning dose ofmasculine eye-candy to appeal to the femaleaudience that apparently makes most of the bodywash purchasing decisions, while still also givingthe subtle message to men that if they just usedOld Spice body wash, they too could be as suaveand masculine as Old Spice Man.This image attracts the male population tothe brand. Environmental SnapshotHere I have taken some environmental snapshot pictures in Boots and one of Superdrug I have also taken a few of the internet from different stores worldwideto compare the differences. The pictures on the right are from an American store that promotes Old spice. This shows that Old spice’s target audience arebased more in America due to the point of sale design. The point of sale on the right hand side shows interactive features that are helping with the promotionof Old spice. In comparison the pictures on the left have no interactive features and do not have their own display but are displayed with many other productswith Old spice on the bottom shelf out of the way. This tells me that Old spice have not put a lot of effort into the promotion of their product in some shops. The Old spice products in Boots are surrounded by other products that are related to that type of product. Old spice’s products look like they are beingshadowed by all the other products within the shop. In Boots there are only a few products from Old spice this tells me that Old spice need to improve on theirdistribution of products within certain shops.Superdrug is one of the shops that I will want to place my point of sale in as Superdrug fits the style of mybrand. Superdrug has many fragrance point of sales within their shop which display many different mensfragrances. I want to place my point of sale in this shop as all the products relate to my brand are of the samesort of price which makes my brand fit right in. All of the products have the same kind style as Old spice and alloffer the same things as Old spice. In shops like Superdrug and Boots my product and my point of sale wouldbe ideal for these shops mainly due to pricing.Key Findings• Point of sales only in Americafor Old spice.• Only a few products in shops.• Positioned in the same area asother deodorants.
First Hand Existing Design AnalysisAesthetics: The aesthetics of this point of sale unit look great and have been designed very well. These units hasvarious layers of products that have been designed for men and women the men’s products have been placed on thetop shelves and the women’s products on the lower shelves. This unit has no features that make it different from anyother units. All of the unit along the wall next to Gucci have the same design therefore the same features thishowever is a weakness of the point of sale as it make the point of sales look too similar and customers will not see thedifference in brands they will only see difference in price. The diesel and Giorgio Armani point of sale have the exactlysame design features which make them look the same and neither of them will stand out as they look too similar.Cost: The cost of these products are ranged between £18 - £72.This would be targeted at an age range of 18- 36 yearolds that prefer an expensive deodorant or aftershave. These three point of sales all have the same costing point ofsales, These point of sales feature the same layout and materials making the cost the same.Customer: The customer for these products are for men and women aged between 18 - 30.Gucci has products thatare of an expensive price and are targeted at the wealthier audience. The Giorgio Armani range have the same kind ofage range as Gucci and these will both be aimed at wealthier people and the more professional male and female. Thediesel range is slightly cheaper however will still be targeted at the same age range as the other two point of sales.Environment: The environment for this point of sale is next to many other points of sale that are of an expensive priceand are aimed at the wealthier audience. All of the point of sale next to this one have the same layout which displaysmen’s fragrances at the top and women’s at the bottom.Size: The size of this point of sale is at a good size however does not stand out as all of the point of sales are exactlythe same but with different products. Gucci should have made their point of sale more exclusive by making eitherlarger of smaller to give it exclusivity.Safety: This point of sale unit is very safe as it has been enclosed in the wall so it prevents the unit collapsing on anycustomers. This unit has no sharp edges as all of the edges have been enclosed in the wall. The unit safety featuresare the same to all the other point of sales on the wall like this one.Function: The function of this point of sale is to attract customers to. The point of sale unit offers lighting that will bemore appealing to the customers. The title Gucci is lit up which will be more likely to attract more customers. None ofthese point of sales uses any interactive features however they all incorporate testers to the public which is a goodpart of these point of sales.Material: This point of sale is made out of acrylic and would have probably had a vinyl gloss finish to make it look moreexpensive and more aesthetically pleasing. The material of all three of these point of sales are probably the same as itwould have saved the company money to make them all out of the same material.
First Hand Existing Design AnalysisAesthetics: The aesthetics of these points of sale are very modern and stylish and suit house of Frasers stylevery well. The point of sale at the top uses very stylish materials which make it stand out compared to all ofthe other point of sales. The materials on the top point of sale make it stand out as no other point of saleincorporates all the same materials as this one. The point of sale in the centre is also a very exclusive anddifferent point of sale as no other point of sale uses the same design as this one or the same materials in thesame way that this point of sale uses them. The point of sale located at the bottom is also very stylish anduses the colours well.it also uses stylish materials that many other point of sales in the shop use making it notseem as exclusive as the different point of sales.Cost: The top point of sale that is housing YSL is of an expensive price which ranges from £20 to £70.The pointof sale in the middle which is housing Dolce & Gabbana ranges from £18 to £60.which is a cheap to mediumprice. The bottom point of sale which is Giorgio Armani ranges from £30 to £70.Customer: All of these point of sales target the same audience which is men and women aged between 20years old and 38 years old. They all have slightly different designs to try and ensure they reel their customer inbetter than other points of sales.Environment: These point of sales are all in house of Fraser department store and are located in the fragrancesection with loads of other point of sales. They all have been positioned in certain areas to ensure they gaintheir customers.Safety: These three point of sales all incorporate the same safety features however they will have someslightly different requirements which they have to meet to ensure that the point of sale is safe for the publicviewing.Size: These point of sales are all of a good size for the public viewing and because they are not tall butmedium sized then the public will prefer this size according to my questionnaire.Function: These point of sales have the same features these are lights. Their is lights that make the title lightup and allow the user to be attracted to the point of sale more.Material: The two point of sales at the bottom of the page use the same material which is acrylic. The point ofsale at the top of the page is the only different point of sale in the shop that uses glass wood and acrylic thismake s the point of sale stand out much more compared to all the other points of sale that use the samematerial.
Aesthetics: All three of these Hugo boss point of sales incorporate the same design except for one as it is adifferent Hugo boss style. The Hugo boss Orange uses the colour orange within all of its products and uses thecolour orange to promote the new range that they offer by being different. The other two Hugo boss point ofsale incorporate the usual Hugo boss style however they are different styled point of sales. The Hugo boss one inthe middle offers the womens fragrance at the top and the mens at the bottom. However the other Hugo bosspoint of sale has the mens fragrances at the top and the womens products at the bottom.Cost: The cost of all three point of sale products range between £26 - £56.These products are all of an average tohigh price. These point of sales have been designed to make them look more expensive than they actually are.Customer: The customer of this product would be 18 to 40 year olds. Hugo boss tries to aim their product at themore professional type of men who want to smell more masculine. These three products all try to attract thesame age range and style of men and women.Environment: All three of these point of sales are placed in an area where fragrances are the main selling point. They have all been placed in different areas to try and persuade customers to purchase them by allowing thecustomer to keep on seeing the fragrances.Safety: These three Hugo boss point of sales would all incorporate the same safety features enabling them to besafe to the public. The safety of these point of sales would all be the same as the manufacture has to ensure thatthe features are the same.Size: The point of sale on the left and the point of sale in the middle are of the same size. This is a good size for apoint of sale as it allows the customer to have to take more interest into the product as they have to bend downjust to try and see some of the products. The point of sale at the bottom of the page is eye level with allcustomers looking at it, it also offers all the products to be display very clearly and allows the customers to easilybe able to access the products.Function: These Hugo boss point of sale units all have the same features and they are lighting in the title andbehind the products shelving. The function of these point of sales are to attract customers. These point of salesdo this quite well as they are positioned in different areas of the fragrance section and allow the customer to beconstantly reminded of the Hugo boss point of sale units.Material: The three of these units would be made out of the same material. Which consists of acrylic and someglass. This allows the point of sale to look modern and stylish as well as expensive which attracts morecustomers to the point of sale.First Hand Existing Design Analysis

MetalAcrylicGlassWoodSmall - 1Medium - 18Large - 3Extra Large - 8After conducting my questionnaire of asking a mixture of 30 people from the public and frommy family and friends seven different questions regarding point of sale units. I have foundsome results that I will take into consideration when constructing my point of sale unit.ResultsAfter asking the question, What size do you like a point of sale to be ?.I have found some results that Iwill have to take into consideration. I have found out that the majority of people prefer observing andusing a medium sized point of sale in comparison to any other size. With extra large coming in secondplace with 8 people choosing it and large in third with 3 people choosing it and small coming bottomwhere only a single person chose it. The Medium sized point of sale won by a massive ten people thistold me that a medium sized point of sale is much preferred by the public. I then queried them abouttheir answer and asked them why they chose their answer over the others. I found out that the peoplewho preferred the medium sized point of sales thought they looked better and that they didn’t try toohard to stand out and end up overshadowing the product on display. The people who chose the extralarge thought that it was better to try and attract as many people as you could to the point of sale evenif it means that the product will become shadowed by the point of sale. As for the few people thatchose large they thought it looks better to be slightly bigger than normal but not too big so that theproduct is not shadowed. As for the other person who chose small they just thought that it was betterif the product had more presence compared to the point of sale that was displaying it.After asking the question What material would you like to see on a point of sale ?.I found someinteresting results that didn’t surprise me as much as I thought it would. I found out that themajority of people preferred to see Metal on a point of sale unit. This was no surprise to me asmetal is modern and is the latest material that designers are using. In second it was acrylic whichwas no surprise at all as loads of manufactures are using it in their products and because of theshine it can give of it makes it look more expensive. In third glass came this was a surprise as I haveonly seen a few glass point of sale unit however the few I have seen are very stylish and modern. Infourth was wood which I was expecting as wood is very traditional and many point of sale’s havestopped using this to try and modernise their company. Judging by my results I will look intomaking my point of sale out of Metal however due to the prices of it I may have to settle for acrylic. However going by the public acrylic will still attract people to the point of sale. The people whochose Metal said that they thought it was stylish and expensive making the product on sale appearmore exclusive and expensive. They also said that by having Metal it can make the product ondisplay look better than what it is. The people who chose acrylic said that they thought it wasexpensive and stylish as they claimed to have seen it on point of sale units from brands such asChanel and Burberry. This told me that acrylic may be the way to go due to its cheapness and itseffectiveness. People who chose glass said that it made the product more exclusive and that itlooked far more expensive than any other material as when there is a point of sale constructedfrom glass the product is usually enclosed by glass. The few people who chose wood claimed thatit was traditional and would look very good depending on the brand.121062
Market ResearchOld Spice just recently became a "once-again" top-competitor for mensfragrance, body wash, deodorant, and antiperspirant. When Axe debuted in theU.S. in 2002 -- their following and target audience were men 18-34 -- and this isexactly where Old Spice had been failing. Old Spice used to be known as an "oldman product," but with the help of innovative and fresh, young marketers; thecompany rose back to life. Old Spice began to target directly with their "the manyour man could smell like" campaign -- using Isaiah Mustafa who helped toconnect to a younger generation. Ten Minute ObservationI have observed all three of these point of sales for ten minutes and have taken note ofthe amount of attention that they get from the public and what lets the point of saleand whether the point of sale lets the product down. I have also judged the point of saledepending on the product it is displaying. This point of sale was the first one I looked atfor ten minutes. I have found out that thispoint of sale unit did not have a lot ofattention towards it. It only had three peoplego up to it in the space of ten minutehowever they walked away as soon as theysaw the state the point of sale was in. Thispoint of sale is intended to be interactivehowever the age range that this is aimed athas abused the point of sale and drawn allover the point of sale and left it in a mess,Therefor it is not attracting any morecustomers as they are put of by the mess. This point of sale has been placed at the endof an isle this allows it to be seen by thepublic who are passing by. The point of salelets the product down as the product wouldbe bought by a fair few people however thepoint of sale has been vandalised by the agerange for that product. This should be dealtwith by the shop manager and somethingshould be put in place to stop this happening. This point of sale was the second one that Iobserved for ten minutes. In those tenminutes I noticed that it had quite a fewpeople using it straight away when I startedmy observation. In the space of ten minutesit had 12 people use it which averages out tomore that a person a minute. I see this pointof sale as a strong point of sale due to thestrong advertisement everywhere else. Thispoint of sale is for the national lottery whichmost people know about and would useevery week this explains why this point ofsale had this amount of attention. The pointof sale allows the customer to use the plasticstand on it to fill out their lottery card. Thismakes it more efficient for the customer. Thepoint of sale is at a good position in the shopallowing customers who are leaving the shopor entering the shop be able to see the pointof sale before they leave and as they enter. This point of sale is very effective due towhat it is trying to sell. This was the third and final point of salethat I observed for ten minutes. Thispoint of sale had been placed in eye linestraight when you enter the shopmaking it catch your eye straight away. This point of sale I was surprised atbecause it did not have the attentionthat I expected it to have. In the spaceof the ten minutes only four peopleobserved it however did not use theproduct on display. The point of saleitself is placed in a great area and alsohas the product at the point of sale andhas an interactive feature that thecustomer can use. This point of salehowever I think did not live up to theexpectation due to the product on sale. The point of sale done a good job atadvertising the product however thepublic showed no interest in theproduct on display.Key Findings• Interacted with the product.• Only spent a few seconds withthe product on display.• Wasn’t interested in badproduct.

Further Specification• I will use a mixture of curved shapes and straight shapes/lines on my point of sale because I think that curved/Straight lines andshapes look more aesthetically pleasing.• I will want to make my point of sale out of metal judging by my questionnaire that I conducted, however because of the price ofcarbon fibre I will probably have to made my point of sale out of acrylic.• I will need to make my point of sale interactive so that customers are more likely to buy the product and judging by my ten minuteobservation people like being able to interact with the product.• I will have to want to make my point of sale using a mixture of red white and blue which are the colours of Old Spice.• Because Old Spice do not have any point of sales in the UK my point of sale will be the first one so I will have to make it stand outfrom others.• I don’t know whether I want to carry on Old Spice’s modernism style as the original design designs of Old Spice where very good.• Based on my questionnaire I will want to make my point of sale medium sized or extra large as theses where the most popularchoices by the public.• I will want to place my point of sale somewhere around the front of the shop so that it is in the view of the customers.• Old spice have used a very masculine way of advertising however Im not too sure if I want to carry on this masculinity with my pointof sale.• I will possibly supply customers with freebies and testers to allow them to get a taste of the product.• I will aim to keep costs medium to low priced so that my point of sale fits in with the pricing of the brand.
DevelopmentMaterial – Stainless SteelMy concept idea that I am going todevelop will can be made out ofmany materials. The main materialsthat I am considering are Metal ,Acrylic , Glass and Wood. The housing of my concept ideawill need to follow Old spice’smodern style so it will be beneficialfor me to use either glass , acrylicor metal.Stainless Steel is one of the metals that I am considering for thehousing of my concept idea. Stainless Steel maintains it strengthan is corrosion and heat resistant. Stainless steel will allow me tobe able to clean it very easily with any type of modern daycleaner. The material requires little maintenance unlike somesurfaces. This material also has a great strength to weight ratio. This metal does however have it disadvantages such as it isexpensive in certain quantities and grades of it. The metal isdifficult to weld due to its fast dissipation off heat.Material - AcrylicAcrylic is another one of the materialsthat I may be using for my conceptidea. Acrylic is a great product thatcan be easily shaped and moulded. Itis water resistant and does not lose itscolour. Acrylic is very lightweight incomparison to the other productsthat I may be using. Acrylic is alsoimpact resistant and is much moreresistant than glass this is why acrylicis a good alternative to glass. Acrylicalso comes in many different colourand many different grades oftransparency.Acrylic has some major downfalls the main onebeing that it is very easily scratched bymaterials that are not even that sharp. Theacrylic can start to change colour ever soslightly when coming into contact with heat ordirect light for prolonged periods. Acrylic is noteasily recycled and is not biodegradable whichcauses the product to be harmful to theenvironment.
Material - GlassDevelopmentGlass is another one of the materials that I have been guided to use formy concept idea. Glass has some great advantages such as it can bemade into different shapes and sizes. The glass can be different colourand can have different grades or transparency. Glass can be placed inany type of conditions as it does not oxidise. Glass also does not allowfor water to pass through. Glass however does have its downfalls suchas it is an expensive material it also breaks very easily under pressureunless the glass is reinforced. Glass also melts under high temperaturesthis however will not effect my concept.Material - Wood- Solid and hard material- Disordered and amorphous structure- Fragile and easily breakable into sharp pieces- Transparent to visible light- Inert and biologically inactive material.- Glass is 100% recyclable and one of the safest packaging materials due to its composition and propertiesWood is another material that may be best suitedfor my concept idea I have looked at myquestionnaire and it tells me that wood is theleast favourite material probably because of itslooks and that it lacks the modernism for Oldspice. Wood comes in many different types but allof the wood have the same advantages anddisadvantages. Some advantages of wood arethat it is lightweight depending on the size of thewood but for the amount I will need it will belightweight it is also cost effective and I will beable to gain large amounts of wood for a goodprice. Wood is a renewable source which makes itvery easy to get access to and it is 100%recyclable. The disadvantages of wood are itsstrength it can split very easily along the grain.Wood cannot be made into shapes easily and willrequire a high level of skill to construct well.Wood also rots when in contact with water or airthis however can be prevented by use of certainproducts. Wood is also quite flammable.
DevelopmentMaterial – canvasI can use a canvas material to construct the sails thatare located on the front of my concept idea. Canvaswill be a good material to construct the sails out ofdue to it is very easy to cut to shape and it is also verylightweight and strong. Having canvas as the materialof the sails it will still allow them to move when incontact with the wind which is exactly what I need forthe sails. Canvas is also very easy to repair incomparison to other materials that I will considerusing for the sails. Canvas is also waterproof andwindproof due to its tight weave. One of the biggestadvantages of Canvas is its acceptance to chemicaltreatments that can make it flame retardant andincrease its water resistance even more. Canvas hasfew disadvantages such as it absorbs things veryeasily so this makes it bad as it will stain very easily.Because it is a soft fabric if not treated right it willtear and rip. The canvas will need to be treated with achemical before it can be water resistant to a certaindegree.Material - NylonI could use Nylon for the sails of myconcept as nylon is speciallydesigned for sails so it would makesense if I was to use this material it alldepends on the cost of the materialand whether or not it will serve thepurpose of my concept better thancanvas. Nylon has some advantagessuch as it is an updated version frommaterials like canvas and it is costeffective which will aid me whenconstructing my concept as I want tokeep costs as low as possible. Nylonhas a high tenacity and has a goodstrength to weight ratio. Nylon alsohas a high resilience and has anexcellent abrasive resistance.
DevelopmentMaterial - Rubber Material - MetalRubber is one of the twomaterials that I may constructthe feet out of. The feet aregoing to be placed on thebottom of my concept. Rubberfeet have quality traction whichis ideal for my concept. Therubber feet also don’t scratchthe floor or whatever surfacethey are on. The rubber alsoconducts electricity which willmake my concept safer. Rubberfeet are also shock absorbent. There are no disadvantages ofrubber feet that I have found sofar.Metal is the other materialthat I may use for the feet ofmy concept idea. The metalfeet look much more stylishcompared to the rubber feet. The metal feet are alsostronger and harder than therubber feet making them lesslikely to need replacing. Themetal feet however willscratch the surface it is on andit does not conduct electricitylike rubber. Overall the rubberfeet are much better than themetal feet in all ways.
DevelopmentMaterial – Vinyl LettersTo make the letters on the bottom of my conceptidea I will use either vinyl or acrylic. Vinyl is a goodmaterial to use but I think it looks cheap and it isineffective as I don’t believe it stands out thatmuch. However acrylic can have downfalls such asit will be harder to construct it will cost muchmore compared to the vinyl.Vinyl comes in many different sizes , fonts ,colours and patterns. You can create longmessages with little money being spent. Vinylletters can be placed virtually anywhere and canbe easily positioned. Vinyl is very affordable anddepending on where you get it from then you canget an 8ft long message for £2o.The letters can bestuck very easily to virtually any material. Theletters are also designed to be removable so theycan be changed anytime. The only disadvantage ofthe vinyl is that because of its cheapness thequality will not be as good for my concept as it willmake my concept look cheaper.Acrylic lettering would also begood for my concept idea as itlooks more expensive. Acryliclettering can be custom paintedwhich is good as I could makethem fit in more with my design.Acrylic letters are durable andpractical. The acrylic can be usedas a better alternative to metallettering which costs more.Acrylic lettering is much morestylish than vinyl and willhopefully make my design lookmuch better compared to thevinyl. Acrylic letters however willcost me more to get and willhave to be laser cut which willrequire more time.Material - Acrylic Letters
Manufacture – Acrylic letteringTo make the acrylic letteringfor my concept design I willfirst need to design what Ineed the letters to say. I willuse Tech Soft for this. Tech softwill allow me to construct theletters to the exact shape andsize that I want. Once I havedone this I will need to send mywork to the laser cutter whereit will be cut out.The acrylic lettering will nottake that long to cut out as Ionly have 8 letters that willrequire cutting. These letterswill be fairly small as well.Construction – Acrylic lettersAfter I have constructed my acrylic letters I will need to placethem onto my design. To do this I will need to use either hotglue or araldite.Hot glue is very easy to use and can be applied very easily tomy design. The hot glue dries clear with little mess it wouldbe good for the application of the acrylic letters. Araldite isalso a great chemical that I could apply to the letters so thattheir would be a tight bond to the letters. Araldite also driesclear and is relatively easy to apply.Development
Manufacture - SailsIf I decide to use nylon for the sails on mydesign then I will need to use a craft knife andwill need to cut the nylon very quickly to avoidrough edges and a messy end product. I willhave to mark out where I want to cut the nylonand then I will need to use a craft knife to cutalong the line that I made. When I use the craftknife I will have to ensure that I have a coupleof spare blades as the nylon may force theblades to break. If I decide to use canvas for the sails then I willneed to use elongated scissors to cut it. First Iwill need to mark out on the material the sizeand shape I require and then I just need tosimply cut it. Canvas will make it much easierfor me to make the sails out of as it does notrequire a lot of skill just a steady hand to followthe markings. The canvas will gain a clean cutwith the scissors and it will not matter if I endup ruining the first piece as canvas is relativelycheap in comparison to nylon. It will be in my best interest to use canvas dueto its easy cutting and that it is inexpensivecompared to the nylon.Construction - SailsTo attach the sails to my design I will needto use either a stapler or I will need to drillholes in the wood and in the canvas. Toattach the canvas to the wood I will need tomake sure that I first have the material cutto the right shape and size. I will then needto staple the canvas to different places onmy design. The stapler will be very easy touse and will be cost effective and will nottake much time at all. However if I decideto use a drill to place holes in the materialand my design I will need to ensure thatthey are in the perfect place and I will needto ensure that I have the right sized drill bit. After I drill the holes in both the wood andthe canvas then I will need to get somesmall screws and place them through thehole of the canvas and then through theholes in the wood and then screw them inwith the screwdriver or the drill.
AestheticsOn my design I have decided to place a fan at one end so thatthe canvas material will blow and move which will increase theinteractivity of my design. This feature will make it moreattractive to the public and will make my design much better. Ihave decided to do this as my design was lacking interactivity. With the fan in my design it will blow the canvas which will actlike the sails which will refer back to old spice and give it abetter feel. The canvas will have the old spice fragrance on itso that when the fan is on the scent will be pushed of thecanvas and spread around the area. This is what the sails will look like.I will place the fanhere as there isspace for the fanto sit. With the fan beinghere it is in aperfect position toblow the sails andgive of the oldspice scent. These aresome fan ideasthat I could usein my design.
Manufacture - HousingTo make the housing of my design I willuse pine. First of all I will need to markthe piece of wood using a pencil andruler. After I have marked out the pine Iwill need the use the band saw to cut itout with. After I have cut the wood I willneed to ensure that the wood is smoothto do this is will use the belt sander.I will need to use Tech soft to design thecurved piece of acrylic I will then need tosend it to the laser cutter to get cut out.I will have to make 6 pieces of woodand one piece of acrylic to make thehousing. Here I have pointed out the six piecesof wood and one piece of acrylic that Iwill need to make the housing.Construction - HousingTo put these six pieces of wood and onepiece of acrylic together I will use a mixtureof joints and adhesives.I will use the butt joint to join the bottomand side pieces of wood together. I willthen use the mitre joint to join the othertwo side pieces of wood together. I willfinally use araldite to joint the curved bit ofacrylic to the wood. Once I have attachedthe wood and the acrylic then my housing isfinally complete and is then ready to beattached to the base.
Construction - BaseManufacture - BaseTo manufacture the base of my design I can either usefour pieces of wood or a single solid piece of wood. If Iuse four pieces of wood it will allow me to make a morecomplex base and will also allow me to change to veryeasily and will also allow me to not waste any material. To make the four pieces of wood I will first need to geta large piece of oak wood I will then need to use theband saw to carefully cut out the shapes that I need tomake the base. To do this I will first need to mark outon the piece of wood the dimensions of the base andthen I will cut it out with the band saw.Once I have used the band saw to cut the wood out Iwill then use the belt sander to smooth the edgesdown. To put the four pieces of wood together Ican either use an adhesive or I can use ajoint that will support itself.I will connect the four pieces of wood usinga dovetail joint. The dovetail joint will be ideal for what Ineed it for as it will make my design lookvery neat and tidy.1. Square the ends of the wood to be dovetailed.2. Set the sliding bevel to a suitable pitch of between 1 in 6 for heavy work and1 in 8 for smaller and more detailed work. Avoid sharp angles as the pointsof tails break easily.3. Scribe the tails on the end and face of the wood and mark the “waste”pieces.4. Clamp the wood in a vice and cut on the waste side with a tenon saw.5. Lay the two pieces over each other and transfer the markings through thecuts with a tenon saw.6. Remove the waste between tails and pins with a chiselTo construct the dovetail joint I will need to :This selected area is the base. Here I have spoken about how I would use woodto manufacture my base however when makingmy design I chose to use acrylic purely because ofits aesthetics it proved to be easier to work withand came in a variety of colours unlike wood. Theacrylic also would not need and type of finish suchas varnish as wood would need a finish such asthis.
Specification CheckpointI have so far achieved thisspecification as my design hassuccessfully used a mixture ofcurved and straight lines as well asshapes.• I will use a mixture of curvedshapes and straight shapes/lines onmy point of sale because I thinkthat curved/Straight lines andshapes look more aestheticallypleasing. • I will want to make my point of sale out ofmetal judging by my questionnaire that Iconducted, I also could use carbon fibrehowever because of the price of carbon fibreI will not be using this. I will probably have tomake my point of sale out of acrylic.I have not decided to make my design out ofeither of these materials as metal I think will notsuit my brand and carbon fibre will cost quite alot of money for the amount that I want. Acrylicwill also not suit my design I believe that woodwill suit my design the best so I have decided touse wood for the majority of my design.• I will need to make my point ofsale interactive so thatcustomers are more likely tobuy the product and judging bymy ten minute observationpeople like being able tointeract with the product.I have made my design slightlyinteractive as the customer canpress a button that will turn on afan which will make the fragranceon the sails spread around the area.• I will have to want to make mypoint of sale using a mixture ofred white and blue which arethe colours of Old Spice. So far I have not mentioned that I willuse red white and blue however Iconstructed a model using Googlesketch and I have used them threecolours in it.• Because Old Spice do not have any point ofsales in the UK my point of sale will be thefirst one so I will have to make it stand outfrom others.I have kind of made my design stand outas it is using Old Spice’s logo which isunusual which will hopefully make it standout.• I don’t know whether I want tocarry on Old Spice’s modernismstyle as the original designdesigns of Old Spice where verygood.I have continued to use oldspice’s modernism style by usingtheir logo as part of my design.• Based on my questionnaire I will want tomake my point of sale medium sized orextra large as theses where the mostpopular choices by the public. So far I have not mentioned the sizethat I will make my design, however Iwill decide to make my designmedium sized.• I will aim to keep costs medium to low priced sothat my point of sale fits in with the pricing ofthe brand.I have said that I would use wood this willhelp me keep costs low and will make mydesign fit in better with the companies style.• I will want to place my point of salesomewhere around the front of the shopso that it is in the view of the customers. So far I have not mentioned where I willplace my design within a shop.• Old spice have used a verymasculine way of advertisinghowever Im not too sure if I wantto carry on this masculinity withmy point of sale.• I will possibly supply customerswith freebies and testers to allowthem to get a taste of the product.I am not too sure how I will carry on OldSpice’s masculinity so far I have not metthis specification.I have not mentioned freebies as such atthe moment but I have used the idea of afan blowing the fragrance of the sailsaround the shop.
AestheticsOn my design I can add a hole behind the sails so that I could place theold spice fragrance behind them and them make them squirt thefragrance once the fan is turned on. This will probably have to be done byusing a motor that triggers the fan to turn on as well as the fragrance tosquirt. I will need to cut a hole inside my design to do this I will need touse a drill with a circular drill bit and I will then need to use the hegnersaw. To do this using the hegner saw I will need to take the saw’s bladeof and place it inside the hole that I just drilled out. I am not too sure howbig I will need to make the hole I presume that it will not be too large andwould be rather small. This is how my designwill look after I havedrilled the hole in theback after I havecreated the hole thatwill house a bottle ofthe fragrance. This is the hole that Iwill drill out.
UsabilityI will design my point of sale in way in which it will havethe ability to be mounted onto a table this will be of anaverage height to the average Male/Female.I will make my point of sale use rubber feet which Imentioned earlier on in development which will aid inthe security of my point of sale when on a table.Having my point of sale at this height will make it moreergonomic for the user. This is the style of table that I willuse to mount my design on.This drawing that I have made shows theaverage height of a person and where mypoint of sale will be positioned.UsabilityI will make the button seen in this picture outof rubber as it will be safer. By having rubberfor the button I will not cause any safetyissues to rise compared to a material such aswood or metal. If I used metal the edgeswould be far harder to make smooth toprevent scratching. By having rubber it will berelatively soft and will not have any sharpedges.
ComponentsThe wiring for my point of sale willneed to go inside the design. I willmake ridges that the wiring insidewill sit on I will have to use a staplegun as well to hold the wires inplace. Here are the ridgesthat I would put inplace on my design toensure that the wirescan go around to thedesignated point.I would need to use a staplegun which would ensure thewires stay In the correctplaces.ComponentsOn my design I will place L.E.D lightsaround the letters so that the letteringwill attract the customers more and willlook more aesthetically pleasing. The lights that will be placed aroundthe letters will be coloured blue and redthis links with Old Spice and will makemy design look more themed to OldSpice. The L.E.D’s will be placed around theseletters and will have to be positionedcarefully around all of the letters. I willhave half of the letters red and half ofthem blue.
ManufacturerUsabilityI will need to make my design safer for the use of the public I willneed to do this by making the sharp edges on my design eitherrounded or I will have to put a rubber guard around them. If Idecide to round the edges off I will need to use the belt sander ofthe file and will need to ensure that the edges are not sharp inany way. If I decide to use rubber guards around the edges then Iwill probably be able to buy them off the internet. These are some of the guards that I may be able to useon my design this will hopefully ensure protection. This is my other option which is the belt sander orfile this will also enable me to make the edgessmoother. The red ringsrepresent themain cornersthat I willneed tocover oradapt. To make the piece of rubber I can either buy it infrom the internet or produce it myself. If I was tocreate the piece of rubber myself it would bemuch hassle for such a small component this iswhy I will choose to buy it in from the internet.I have said that I will use rubber corner edges sothat I can protect my design. I decided not to usethis as they were not aesthetically pleasing. Therubber edges however will ensure that no injury’shappen, I did ensure that I used acrylic which I fileddown so that they are not sharp.
This button will open the door to the rightand will also trigger the fragrance behind thesails to activate and spray the fragrance ontothe sails while this is happening the fan will beturned on as well.UsabilityConstructionThis button will have to be wired up from theinside and the wires will run through thedesign. I will support the wires how I haveshown in this picture using ridges that willhold the wire and then I will use a staple gunto ensure that the wires do not move. The door and the little slit in my designwill be wired up to the button which willactivate them upon interaction with thebutton. To make the button stable I will have tocraft a gap in the material below which willhouse the button. I will then need to makesure that the button stays in the gap. To dothis I will use araldite to glue the sides ofthe button to the sides of the gap.The button will still easily be able to be pushed down bythe user as their will be nothing stopping it. I will ensurethat the button works before I glue it to the gap made.I have said that I will use a indent in thematerial so that the button becomes stable Icould however use screws either side of thebutton to ensure stability and would allow thebutton to be pressed many times withoutlosing its positioning.
ManufactureConstructionTo manufacture the rubber feet I can go downtwo paths one being me making the rubber feetand the second me ordering the feet online. If Iget the rubber feet online then It will allow me tohave more time for other parts of my design. If Idecide to make the feet myself It will take me awhile as producing the rubber feet will be verytricky and time consuming. This is why I havedecided to get the feet from the internet. To attach the rubber feet onto my design I caneither use the screw on rubber feet which I willneed to drill a hole into my design so that therubber feet can screw into it. The other option isthat I get rubber feet that I will be able to attachon with an adhesive. If I attach the feet with anadhesive I will use araldite.I will need to make holes inthe bottom of my design if Iuse the screw in rubber feet. Iwill make the holes in thebottom of my design using adrill.Araldite will be the best glue that I can use for gluingrubber feet onto the bottom of my design. This isbecause it is the strongest resin that I can use.To attach the rubber feet on my design I hassaid that I will use araldite, instead I couldhave used screws which would secure thefeet more and would make the design morestable and less prone to fall over.
ManufactureConstructionTo make the door I will first need to geta piece of wood that is at least an inchthick. I then need to draw out the sizeof the door on the piece of wood andthen using a hegner saw I will cut themarkings out. I will then need to makesure that I use the belt sander tosmooth all of the edges on the wood.I will need to purchase two hinges. Thehinges will be placed at the top andbottom of the door. I will also need tocreate a few small holes on the doorand on my design so that the hinge canbe screwed in.I will use the hinges to attach thedoor to my design. I will need somesmall screws that will go throughthe door and the hinge. The screwswill go through the small hole that Imade on my design. Here I have shown a Googlesketch up model that is showingan example of how my door onmy design would look.I have said that I will use screws to securethe door however they could potentiallycrack the acrylic due to its thickness, Iinstead used epoxy resin to secure thehinge to the frame and to the door. Theepoxy resin proved to be a bit messy butprevented me cracking my door usingscrews.
UsabilityThe fan that is in my design will work by being activatedby the button on the front of my design. The fan will bebattery powered. It will be position at the side of mydesign and will automatically come on when the buttonis turned on. This will also trigger the fragrance to sprayonto the sails and the fan will fan the scent around thearea. The button on the front of mydesign will be wired up to a circuitboard in the centre of my design. The circuit board will also beconnected to the fan and thefragrance bottle mechanism. The circuit board willhave to be positionedin the centre of mydesign and will haveto be supported bysmall brackets. It willbe positioned on theback wall of mydesign.ComponentsI will need to use a circuit board in my design itwill be placed inside my design. I can useresistors so that I can allow a certain voltageto flow through to the other components. Thecircuit board will be connected to the fan andthe button. The circuit board will be poweredby a battery that will also be connected.BatteryFanButtonThe circuit board is the only way that I willbe able to connect all three things to it andstill be able to easily manage the othercomponents. The Fan , Button and Battery. The circuit board will have to be positionedin the middle of the inside of my design andthe wires will be able to easily run aboveand below it.This is where thecircuit board andwires will bepositioned insidemy design.
ComponentsComponentsThe fan on my design will bepositioned at the side of the it. I willhave to make a indent in the designso that the fan can sit in and will bemore stable. To safely secure my fanI will have to use a hot glue gun thiswill ensure that it stays in positionand does not move. The fan will have to be soldered tothe circuit board to ensure that itturns on when the button is pressed. The fan will be battery powered andwill probably take either AA batteriesor AAA batteries. The battery on my design will have to bepositioned inside the housing and willpower the circuit board and will power thefan. The batteries will have to be positionedclose to the circuit board as it will be easier.Inside the housing the battery will have tobe placed on the side of the wall and willneed a case to ensure it is stable.I will have to make sure that the battery issecure and I will have to use a hot glue gunto secure the case to the inside and I willalso use small screws to ensure that thecase is secure and will not fall when intransport. This is the indent that will securethe fan and will also have a smallhole inside the indent so that thewires can go through.I have said that I will use batteries in my design Icould also use the mains as this will allow me to havehigher wattage and would be more efficient. However by using the mains supply it will restrict thepositioning of my design compared to batterieswhere I can place my design freely around.
ManufactureConstructionMaterialI will use acrylic panels thatwill be placed on top of thewood that is the housing ofmy design. This is what the acrylicpanels will look like on myfinal design. Acrylic willprobably be the best andeasiest material for mydesign as it is easy to useand is easy to shape. To apply the acrylic to thewood I will use epoxyresin. Once the glue hasbeen applied to thewooden surface. I willthen apply each paneindividually. The epoxyresin will have to beapplied before I apply anyof the sails. To manufacture these acrylicpanes I will use the laser cutter. This will enable me to cut allthe pieces that I require withease and will be the mostefficient way of producing thepanes to size.Acrylic is one of the easiest materials towork with in terms of the production ofmy design. I have looked at othermaterials such as wood and variousmetals like aluminium. I have concludedthat acrylic is the best for my designbased on these various tests that I havetaken.0246810Safety TestSafetyTest
Specification CheckpointI have so far achieved thisspecification as my design hassuccessfully used a mixture ofcurved and straight lines as well asshapes.• I will use a mixture of curvedshapes and straight shapes/lines onmy point of sale because I thinkthat curved/Straight lines andshapes look more aestheticallypleasing.• I will want to make my point of sale out ofmetal judging by my questionnaire that Iconducted, I also could use carbon fibrehowever because of the price of carbon fibreI will not be using this. I will probably have tomake my point of sale out of acrylic. In my design I have said that I will be using oakwood for the base of my design and I will beusing oak wood for the housing of my design. Ihave then gone on to mention that the housingof my design which is currently wood will haveacrylic panes placed over the top of the woodso that I can get the colour that I want.• I will need to make my point ofsale interactive so thatcustomers are more likely tobuy the product and judging bymy ten minute observationpeople like being able tointeract with the product.I have made my design slightlyinteractive as the customer canpress a button that will turn on afan which will make the fragranceon the sails spread around the area.• I will have to want to make mypoint of sale using a mixture ofred white and blue which arethe colours of Old Spice.I have made sure that I am using thesethree colours I have shown this in aGoogle sketch up model and havementioned it when considering thematerial that will have these colourcapabilities.• Because Old Spice do not have any point ofsales in the UK my point of sale will be thefirst one so I will have to make it stand outfrom others.I have kind of made my design stand outas it is using Old Spice’s logo which isunusual which will hopefully make it standout.• I don’t know whether I want tocarry on Old Spice’s modernismstyle as the original designdesigns of Old Spice where verygood.I have continued to use oldspice’s modernism style by usingtheir logo as part of my design.• Based on my questionnaire I will want tomake my point of sale medium sized orextra large as theses where the mostpopular choices by the public.I have not given any accuratedimensions as yet for the sizing of mydesign I will however mention theexact measurement in the cutting listlater on• I will aim to keep costs medium to low priced sothat my point of sale fits in with the pricing ofthe brand.I have said that I would use wood this willhelp me keep costs low and will make mydesign fit in better with the companies style.I have now gone on to mention that I will beplacing acrylic panes over the top of thewood so that I can get the colours that Iwant.• I will want to place my point of salesomewhere around the front of the shopso that it is in the view of the customers.I have still not mentioned the positioningof my design within a shop. I will howeverbe showing this later on.• Old spice have used a verymasculine way of advertisinghowever Im not too sure if I wantto carry on this masculinity withmy point of sale.• I will possibly supply customerswith freebies and testers to allowthem to get a taste of the product.I am not too sure how I will carry on OldSpice’s masculinity so far I have not metthis specification.I have not mentioned freebies as such atthe moment but I have used the idea of afan blowing the fragrance of the sailsaround the shop.
ManufactureConstructionTo manufacture the slot in the side of mydesign that will hold and support the fan. IWill have to use the laser cutter so thatthere is a hole in the acrylic I will then usesome small pieces of acrylic that I can cutusing the band saw which will be positionedunderneath the hole that has been made Iwill then position a small piece of wood witha small hole which the wires of the fan willgo through. The hole will have to be bigenough so that the wires can securely gothrough.I will use epoxy resin to secure the pieces ofacrylic to each other and the small piece ofwood to them. The epoxy resin will be able tohold the pieces of wood as well as the acrylic. Iwill have to ensure that I keep all of the piecescarefully aligned to ensure that the wires will beable to easily go through.I have said that I will use liquid solventcement to secure the pieces of acrylictogether. This is the best glue that I coulduse for this particular job however I couldalso use another glue such as epoxyresin.Solvent cement is much easier to workwith and provides very little messwhereas epoxy resin can create a messeasily and can be more difficult to use.
ComponentsComponentsThe button on my design which ispositioned on the front of it will belinked to a circuit board. Thebutton will have wires that go intothe housing and will go up theinside of the wall and will thenconnect to the circuit board. The button will be alreadyconstructed and will just have tobe slotted into a hole in the base. The hinges on my design will be connecting to thebase and to the door to ensure that the door openswell. The door will be wide enough so that you canplace and take out an old spice can. i will also needto make sure that the hinges are evenly placed onthe door. The handle for the door will need to be ofa reasonable size so that staff can open it whenthey need to replace the can.
ManufactureConstructionOn the front of my design where Ihave the Old spice lettering I will haveL.E.D’s positioned around them. I willneed to make the L.E.D’s go aroundcertain letters so that the point ofsale stands out more. I will need tomake small areas for the L.E.D’s sothat they can be secure. I will need tomake sure that all of the L.E.D’s canlink together and all run off the samepower being a battery inside of mydesign. To make the small holes forthe LE.D’s to sit and be secure I willneed to use a small drill and drill holesin the required place that I want.To ensure that the L.E.D’s are securely inposition I may need to use epoxy resinor some PVA glue to secure the edgesof the L.E.D’s. The L.E.D’s will already bequite secure as their will be holes thatthey can fit into. These holes willhopefully secure them enough so that Imay not even need to use any type ofglue or resin. Here I have said that I will useL.E.D lights on my design, they arebrighter and more efficient incomparison to normal bulbs. Thenormal bulbs are considerablyworse in every way. L.E.D’s aremuch safer than normal bulbs asthey emit less wattage but morepower.
ManufactureConstructionTo manufacture the hole that Iwill need to secure the buttonfor my design, I may be able touse Techsoft which will enableme to laser cut the hole in thebase of my design. This will saveme using different machinery tomanufacture a time consumingpart of my design. The hole inthe design will easily be able tohold the button in place but Imay still need to use some glueso that it is 100% secure.Once I have made this hole I will thenneed to ensure that I use small edgesthat will hold the button in place andthat will still enable me to get thewires of the button through the hole.To construct the small edges I willjust use small pieces of wood andthen use PVA glue to stick the edgesto the base so that the button staysin position and so that the wires canget through and also to ensure thatthe wires are slightly tight and notloosely hanging.I have said that I will use PVA to glue the piecesof wood together this glue is the best for thisapplication and suits it much better than otherglue’s. The PVA gets absorbed by the wood andcreates long strains into the woods grain andholds the pieces of wood together. This type ofglue is far more suitable than a glue such asaraldite.
Specification CheckpointI have achieved this specification asmy design has successfully used amixture of curved and straight linesas well as shapes.• I will use a mixture of curvedshapes and straight shapes/lines onmy point of sale because I thinkthat curved/Straight lines andshapes look more aestheticallypleasing.• I will want to make my point of sale out ofmetal judging by my questionnaire that Iconducted, I also could use carbon fibrehowever because of the price of carbon fibreI will not be using this. I have however made itso that the fragrance will be sprayedaround an area when the customerinteracts with the button.
Plan for manufacture1. Made the base from white acrylic using finger joints to connect the box together.2. I then attached the wooden body to the base.3. I then attached the red and blue acrylic panels to the back and front.4. I then attached the two pieces of blue acrylic to the right hand side of my design.5. I have then attached the piece of flexible red acrylic to the left of my design.6. I then created a hole in this piece of red acrylic using a drill so that the fan can sit in it.7. I then used a chisel to chisel out a dip in the hole so that the fan is more stable.8. I then created holes in the front of my design and used the pop rivet gun to secure the sails tothe front.9. I finally applied my vinyl letters to my acrylic base.
