Winter skin is a real phenomenon even in warmer climates due to seasonal changes that dry out skin. A daily skin care routine using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer with SPF, and occasional exfoliant can help combat dry skin. Key steps include cleansing, protecting from sun exposure, and restoring hydration to keep skin healthy throughout the winter months.
Banish Dry Winter Skin with a Simple Skin Care Routine
1. Banish Dry Skin or what I call Winter skin. We have winter skin even in
South Florida. Our skin changes all of the time. Even though we do not have
the cold in Florida we do have a change of season. Women’s and Men’s skin
changes all of the time. You can not expect your skin to stay the same. As we
age are skin changes and as the weather changes so does our skin.
When we go through stress skin changes and when we get excited about
something it changes.
Using the same skin care on your skin should also change.
Skin care doesn’t have to be complicated. Small steps like using a moisturizer
take just a few minutes in your daily life. I call skin care CPR for the skin. In
the winter season adjusting your skin care and make small tweaks is a must.
I recommend a good cleanser to clean the dirt out of your skin one I like is
G.M. Collins skin care line carried only in professional spas. I love their new
Bio Organique line very simple and basic with lot’s of results. Great for men
that do not want to spend a lot of time on their regimen.
Just cleanse-protect-and restore again (CPR) for your skin. Avoid products
that can dry out the skin, such as astringents and deodorant soaps. And
sunscreen still is important even during the winter months. I say if you need
to wear sunglasses they you need sun protection. I recommend if you don’t
like a regular sunscreen use a dry mineral sunscreen like Jane Iredale 100%
Mineral make-up. Just brush it on. It is that simple.
Cater a skin care routine to your individual preference. Want to add more
pizazz? Try an exfoliating mask or skin peel. There are several great ones out
there. Use a exfoliating mask or scrub 2 to 3 times a week to exfoliate your
skin to a healthy appearance. Men, exfoliate right before shaving . Dead skin
builds up on our skin causing it to look dull. If you do not exfoliate 2 to 3
times a week your skin will look dull and dry.
2. "Hot water tends to dry your skin more. People don't have to take cold
showers, but they should turn the temperature down a little bit if they are
having problems with dryness or rashes,
Use moisturizer immediately after bathing. "It helps to trap the moisture in your skin and can keep you from
getting dry and itchy . Use a lotion for less dry skin and a cream base for dryer skin types. Any cream with
shea butter is great one that I love is
Stop using astringents and toners, products that tend to be drying to the skin. Find a facial moisturizer that
is fragrance free.
"I always tell people it should be an individual choice. Select the product that's not real heavy, something
that is unscented, and then see how it feels on your skin," McGrann says.
In many cases, the inexpensive products work just as well as the expensive products, McGrann says. If
you're looking for a heavier product, McGrann recommends Vaseline, which doesn't clog pores.
6. Steer clear of fragrances, which can be hard on the skin.
"Fragrance itself tends to be irritating. Heavily moisturized soaps and cleansers and moisturizers actually
can be a problem because they can irritate the skin just based on that," McGrann says.
3. 7. Even during the winter, you're still getting exposure to ultraviolet light through fluorescent lights and just
by being in your car. "I usually recommend a sunscreen year-round for the face, neck, upper chest and the
back of the hands," Wanna says.
She recommends products that contain sunscreen, such as Neutrogena Healthy Defense, Cetaphil and
Purpose. Products should have an SPF of 15 or 30. Wear a regular sunscreen if you're doing more outdoor-
oriented activities.
If you don't wear foundation, you should have a moisturizer with a sunscreen. "Most foundations, because
they have titanium dioxide or another blocking agent, actually function pretty well as a sun blocker,"
McGrann says.
8. Consider using a moisturizing mask for your face. "You can use these up to twice a week. Moisturizing
masks help to attract water into the tissue for longer-lasting effects," says Marilyn McManus, an aesthetician
at Sanford Health's Vivaz Medical Spa. Moisturizing masks can be catered to suit your skin type, including
purifying, calming, hydrating and intensive hydrating masks.
