Numbers
Chapter 3
The Number Line



 The number line is often used to picture numbers.




 In algebra we use numbers to the left of zero too.
    The numbers to the right of zero are called positive
     numbers.
    The numbers to the left of zero are called negative
     numbers.
    The numbers shown on the above number line form the set
     of integers.
Positive and Negative Numbers
 Positive and negative numbers are used in everyday life
    Examples:
       Temperature
       Stock Market
       Gains/Losses
       Height (above or below sea level)
Example:
Write a positive or negative
number.
1. A debt of $40
2. A deposit of $10
3. 30 m below sea level
4. A profit of $10
5. 5° below zero
