The Crisis In Scholarly Communication - Presentation Transcript

    1. The Crisis in Scholarly Communication Laura L. Leavitt, Librarian SLIR Faculty Meeting September 11, 2009
    2. What Crisis?
      • Rising costs of journals = NOT sustainable
      • More restrictions on interlibrary loan
      • Restrictions on using electronic materials in class (coursepacks and e-reserves)
    3.
    4. Implications include …
      • Less and less access to published literature
      • Fewer researchers at other institutions will be able to access your published work
      • You may be restricted in using and promoting your own scholarship!!
    5. Solutions Include:
      • Retain copyright and control of your scholarship
      • Reconsider role(s) with (restrictive) publishers of unreasonably expensive journals
      • Participate in campus discussions
      • Talk to your librarian!
