How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?
Blogger I created a blog to present the ongoing work from research through to the =inal piece. By using this method all of my work was in the same place which made it easier to see the progression from start to =inish. This also allowed me to insert multimedia work which I found to be a more interesting way of displaying work. In addition broadening my computer skills. [www.blogger.com]
Xtranormal Because I had created an online blog I was able to present audience feedback in the novel form that Xtranormal provides. I chose to make an ‘interview’ scenario between two characters, I felt this technique would grab the attention of anyone looking at my blog. It also allowed for an element of con=identiality to the person answering the questionnaire in comparison to being =ilmed. [www.xtranormal.com]
Prezi Instead of writing extensive amounts of text on my blog I presented parts in ‘Prezi’s’. The tool was very useful, I think it creates a great aesthetic and by breaking the text up into bite size portions I felt it is more successful in maintaining the audiences attention. However, it can be very time consuming as I am quite a perfectionist and like to experiment until the piece looks as good as it can. [www.prezi.com]
Slideshare I used Slideshare more towards the end of the project, to present the =inal pieces and illustrate the process of production. The website allows you to upload powerpoint presentations, in my opinion they are an excellent way to present information simply and effectively. Since discovering the website I have become hooked, using it for other subjects as a revision resource. [www.slideshare.com]
Youtube Youtube was a great resource throughout the project. I used it a lot in the research stages, the vast amounts of =ilm that exist in the online video library is inexhaustible. I was able to learn about forms and conventions of short =ilm by watching them online. The site was also very useful because of the forum of comments. I was able to read opinions of the thousands of viewers, taking into account the thoughts they expressed when making my own =ilm. [www.youtube.com]
Dafont Another wonder of the Wikinomic age is dafont.com. The site was invaluable in the production and research stages of my ancillary tasks. I used the site to decide what styles of typography I wanted to use and then was able to use the fonts for free. [www.dafont.com]
GarageBand Using GarageBand I created the soundtrack for the =ilm. I used samples that were preloaded onto the software. I chose to use different variations of piano tunes, mainly ‘Delicate’ as I felt it suited the genre of the =ilm. Furthermore I repeated the same tune each time Lily came into shot, the faster beats of the music were re=lective of the emotions that the narrator felt, this was an attempt at helping the audience connect to the protagonist.
GarageBand We also used GarageBand to record the voice over for the =ilm. Using the built in microphone we were able to create a narration which told the story, by doing this we gave the audience subjective character identi=ication with the main protagonist.
Final Cut Pro We used the software Final Cut Pro for the editing of the =ilm, it was essential in the production process. The software has great editing tools and is easy to use for a =irst time user. Adding the soundtrack to the =ilm was simple and I was able to mute sections of the =ilm that had audio disruptions.
Adobe Photoshop CS4 Photoshop was essential in the production of my poster. It was also used for the =ilm where we took around 600 stills from what we had =ilmed and I then made them look like illustrations using =ilters. The task was laborious due to the shear number of =iles but as a =inal product I think the black and white section of animation is good. I regret not doing all of the stills in the same way, but it adds contrast and variation to the =ilm.
Adobe InDesign CS4 I used InDesign as it is much easier to manipulate text in than Photoshop. I created a simple layout and inserted the text and photos I had selected. The software enabled me to create the clean cut aesthetic that I had aimed for. Comparing my coursework from AS clearly shows how much difference the software you choose to use makes.
Web 2.0 The internet was vital in research stages. The conglomeration of information allows fast, easy access to =ilms, posters, articles which I used as a model for the work which I created. Furthermore, the changes in contribution that have been spawned prosumers meant that I could read opinions on =ilms via sites like rottentomatoes. Also, I was able to query any problems I encountered with software on forums, this meant that I could deal with issues quickly and effectively thanks to Web 2.0
Digital Technology was essential in all stages of production. I feel that I took advantage of the resources that I had access to, and by doing so I have learnt a lot about technology, improving my computer skills. I have experimented with different software to =ind out which programs are best suited to the set purpose, knowing now that InDesign is far better suited to manipulating text documents than Photoshop. The =ilm is set to be uploaded on to youtube.com which is arguably the best use of digital technology as the =ilm will be accessible to over 48 million users worldwide. We will be able to get feedback from ratings which will be informative and very useful for assessing the success of our =ilm.
