  • Tips, Tricks and Tools
    Google
  • So you think you know everything there is to know about Google?
    You will be surprised.
Google is not only a search engine but also
an application, a set of tools, and a resource.
  • Why Use Google?
    To get current information
    Definitions of words
    Current news
    General information
  • Why not use Google?
Articles for your papers- while you may find some good information, you need to use library databases and resources for your class papers and assignments.
    Historical News
Unbiased information with both sides of an issue
    Too commercial
Difficult to evaluate what you find
  • The biggest mistake people make when searching Google is
To assume that Google has access to everything.
The reality is that there is a lot of information available online that is not in Google.
They forget to evaluate what they find.
They assume that because something is on the front page it is the best resource.
  • A few more common mistakes are:
Failure to rephrase the same search and to use the advanced search.
When using Google it is important to search multiple times using similar words and phrases.
  • Advanced Search
  • Why advanced search?
The Google advanced search gives you the option to narrow your results by language, file type, domain, phrases, and sites.
You can also use Boolean terms. Not,or,and
to make your search even more specific.
  • Google Scholar
Did you know that Google also has a scholar search engine?
Google Scholar offers journal articles, newspapers and other articles similar to those found in library databases.
However, it is best to search library databases first and then Google Scholar.
If Google Scholar says you have to pay, you may have free access through the library.
  • Google Books
  • Find out which libraries have a book
    Preview books online
    Buy copies of certain titles
Read out of copyright titles in entirety
