    Notes on slide 1

It is the goal of the library to train all public service staff so that they can give excellent service. Training is mandatory and required of all new employees. The basic classes must be completed in order for the employee to pass initial probation. It is the responsibility of the Head of Reference Services (me) to develop and coordinate system-wide staff training. Each reference librarian is assigned to teach one or more of the staff training classes. We team teach – so that we have a backup. Handouts are regularly updated. All public service staff are required to attend training modules based on their job classification.

What is the content? Why are we having a class on this? Databases, print sources, Internet, INSPIRE Training is usually a combination of both electronic & print resources – sometimes one or the other Content adds to reference skills

Standard Training Modules – offered every six months Library Catalog – Basic & Advanced Reference Interview Basic Reference Tools – Print Electronic Databases (LCPL and INSPIRE) Internet Searching New Subject Overview Module each year – Trading Places Readers Advisory Business Resources Genealogy Resources Medical Resources Legal Resources Pre-test for those who think that they can test out of the class Class Outlines: subject information, practice questions, & post-test

-Adopt a database – staff are assigned 3 to 4 databases to monitor for 6 months. Perform a search on staff pc, public pc, and remotely: bi-weekly -And the Winner Is…friendly competition, staff keep monthly log of the databases recommended to patrons, drawing monthly for vendor provided prizes: eg. Bags, pens, book lights, etc. -Weekly Database Q & A’s sent out to all staff through email. Question & answer go out in separate emails. -D. Of Month highlighted on web site, posters & bookmarks in the library -Database tip sheets with sample questions -Vendor training: every other month at Reference Staff Meeting vendors provide 30 – 40 minute training webinars.

Reference librarians spend one week at branch of their choice to experience branch life – in-service training over two summers. In 2003 – 2004 LCPL Children’s librarians spent three weeks in service training in the reference department Spring and summer 2009 Branch heads & Branch supervisors spent three weeks in-service training in the reference department

A valuable employee is one who can do multiple tasks well. Reference & Periodicals librarians have been trained to work public service desks in both departments Reference librarians sub in branches Branch librarians work Sundays at the Central Reference Desk Central clerks sub at branches, non-public service clerks work the circulation desk Reference & Periodicals clerks have been trained to sub in either department as well as give breaks in the Computer Lab Technology Assistants work the Computer Lab, the Middle Level desk when lab is closed for training and the portable Computer Lab at the branch on Sundays at the open branch.
