  • First, a little bit about Beirut - you can breeze through these slides and just give a sense of Beirut as a city - you can riff off the paragraph on Beirut Background in the description and add your own observations about Beirut as a dynamic learning environment and city undergoing rapid change and under pressure from different directions. You don’t have to be specific - just broad brush strokes of the city - intrigue them.Beirut is a city of contradictions, extremes.Global city embodying over and under development.Ripe context for studying post-conflict rebuilding.Market-based approaches for redevelopment. In absence of strong, functioning government thereis an emergence of young leaders - entrepreneurs, artists, activists, designers, researchers. These are the people running the organizations where you will intern.
  • This is downtown - new harbor area for luxury tourism
  • This is in BourjHammoud - Armenian district with open air markets.
  • ew construction of french-style luxury condominiums on previously war-torn areaof central beirut - this is the new face of global, cosmopolitan beirut that is out of reach for most locals.
  • The most active, diverse public space - The Corniche - promenade along the sea.Vendors retrofit bicycles to sell bread.
  • collaboration with Beirut students in spring and summerform research partners, friendships, immediate way of integrating into the city
  • Last year, students collaborated first by getting to know how food shapes their city.Students from both cities tracked what they ate for 5 days
  • They then became research partners.Students in NYC conducted site research of farmers markets in NYC
  • Make a joke at this point -if you don’t love food, then you are strongly advised not to apply for this IFP program. This image is at Souk el Tayeb’s restaurant - where each day another cook from a village comes and prepares a traditional meal using local foods. Students interned here and ate here, a lot!
  • Internship placements are made strategically in this sector of small, independent and grassroots organizations in order to maximize students’ exposure to emerging leaders and immediate impact on local development issues. The program will place students with various non-profit organizations, design, research and urban planning practices.
