    • Scientists closer to finding treatment for life-threatening hereditary disease. And Cancer in a single catastrophe: Chromosome crisis common in cancer causation. Laura Andrea Gómez Marín Medicine Student UPB Medellín-Colombia
      • Many traditional diseases that today doesn´t have a cure yet.
      • Possible new techniques like gene therapy becomes in a hope to
      • reduced symmptoms
      • diseases.
      • Scientists at Royal Holloway University of London, had reported new results base in gene-therapy that consist in an exon skipping, related with Duchenne Muscular Distrophy (DMD).
      • DMD is characterized by
      • a progressive muscle
      • weakness that is caused
      • by the missing of the
      • distrofin protein.
      • This treatment involves short strand of synthetic DNA (antisense oligonucleotide) that can restore production of the protein dystrophin .
      • Because of that this study provides further evidence
      • that could trasform the
      • symptoms into a less
      • severety form.
    • Knowing the complications in young boys with DMD, the opportunity to use gene-therapy in order to find a posible treatment to reduced complications in those patients is an excellent alternative.
      • Scientists of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, found that in some cancers chromosomes can suffer structural changes.
      • In this crisis chromosomes
      • basically explode and DNA
      • repair machinery tries to
      • stick chromosomes back
      • together…
      • But it fails, in consequence
      • occurs hundreds of genomic
      • mutations that is a considerable
      • road to cancer.
      • This report is very interesting as long as the knowledge of structural changes in chromosomes allows to identificated some causes of chromosomes mutations.
      • Technology allows to improve procedures that in medicine are related with the treatment of cancer and DMD.
      Exon skipping gene therapy allows muscular dystrophy patients have great promise as a long term treatment.
      • As long as medical researches can know more aspects related to chromosomes crisis more alternatives will be available to focus on one specific therapy.
