A Day in the Life of Your Child

Homework!
Homework will be assigned in Spelling and Math every Monday through Thursday.
Your child should bring his or her math homework back each day to be checked by the teacher.
Spelling Binders will be brought home each Monday and returned on Friday.
We will model how to do Words Their Way homework activities after the presentation.
Thank you for your support with homework!

Folders, Folders, Folders!
Daily Take Home Folder--This folder will contain any completed work, daily communication, and calendar. This folder should be returned to school each day.
Friday Folder--white folder with important school and grade-level notes as well as weekly progress report to note learning behaviors.

Math--Single and Double Digit Addition and Subtraction, Time, Money, Fractions, Patterns, Problem Solving
Reading--Phonics, Word Families, Comprehension Strategies, Fluency
Writing--Personal Narratives, Book Reviews, Friendly Letters, All About __, Realistic Fiction, Poetry

What We Learn in First Grade . . .
Science--Space, Rocks and Fossils, Toys in Action, Plants and Animals
Social Studies--Communities, Community Helpers, Goods and Services, Maps
Health--Friendship and Feelings, Nutrition, Personal Safety and First Aid

Grading Policy
I--Independent
* Student is doing an amazing job and performing assignments independently and correctly
W-With Assistance
* Student has completed the assignment correctly with strong assistance or guidance from the teacher.
N-Not Apparent
* Student does not show mastery or partial mastery of the assigned skill at this time.

Flexible Grouping
As your child grows academically, he or she may fit in better with different reading or math groups outside of the homeroom placement. Therefore, your child may be taught by another first grade teacher for math or reading.
We will exercise flexible grouping throughout the year to ensure that your child receives the appropriate levels of instruction at all times.

Your child’s success will be amazing this year, especially when we work together!

What is Words Their Way?
Research Based spelling program that focuses on word study
Students are assessed and placed in spelling groups according to their developmental spelling level
Students learn patterns through sorting activities that compare and contrast word features
Students apply and practice through daily writing and reading

Homework and Seatwork
Spelling Activities
Closed Sort: teacher directed
Open Sort: student centered, students create their own category
Blind Sort: student points to category
Speed Sort: timed sorting
Written Sort: student writes words in correct column under correct category heading
Concept Sort: drawing attention to different concepts to develop vocabulary
Picture Sorts: Drawing attention to sounds
Word hunts, brainstorming, sentences.
