People were traveling on the Titanic. • Focuses on the duration of time • We often mention a specific past time • Talks about an event that was happening or in progress in the past Example: at 12:30, what were you doing?
  4. 4. Past time clause: • while goes with past progressive in a time clause. – While I was eating lunch, my phone rang. – Jenny saw me when I was shopping at Hy-Vee. while • OR! – My phone rang while I was eating lunch. – While I was shopping at Hy-Vee, Jenny saw me.

  6. 6. Simple past: • Shows a past event was finished. • An action stopped or interrupted another action. – He was running. He fell.

People were traveling on the Titanic when it hit an iceberg. When the Titanic hit an iceberg in 1912, it was sailing the Atlantic Ocean. when the Titanic hit an iceberg, People were traveling on it.
