  • 4. How does your soap USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE codes or conventions? How does my soap conform to the conventions? I used the conventions of social realism to guide me when filming my own. The opening scene of the soap was filmed in an alleyway in Manchester to give the soap a working class complexion. It show that the characters in the soap are realistic and the storylines are easily related to by the audience. This shot was filmed using Minimal real light to make-up and emphasise the casual “gritty” feel of clothes help the soap, and to to create relate to the real realism. life situations the characters faced.

  • 7. How does your soap USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE codes or conventions?Similarities and differences between my media product and existing media products The main difference between Northern Quarter and Coronation street is age. Coronation street has a greater range of age groups which means it can attract a wide audience as people of differeing ages can relate to the characters of the same age group. Whereas in Northern Quarter the age group of the characters is very similar therefore meaning only an audience of specific age can relate to the social problem’s and dilemma’s of the soap’s characters. Which is challenging the generic codes and conventions of social realism although in an indirect way.
  • 8. How does your soap USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE codes or conventions? Challenging conventions Challenging codes allows soaps to go against their own conventions, this is to keep the audience interested and engaged with the soap. Northern Quarter does not directly challenge any of the conventions of the social realism genre. The Hollyoaks Enchanted Forest advert, premiered 21st of may 2012 directly challenges the soaps conventions.Characters are wearing animal The fairground mise en scene ismasks to represent the relationship’s created to make Hollyoaks seembetween them and their personality. both playful and youthful.

This was because Ibelieve the social realism genre is better reflected in a simpleprofessional product rather than a more cheap and trashy magazine. Poster Ancillary Magazine Ancillary

  • 16. How does your soap USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE codes or conventions? Challenging Magazine Ancillary Conventions To challenge the conventions of the “sophisticated” radio times magazine I used a number of secondary images of Northern quarter to attract the audience further. This is use of multiple photo’s is a convention of the “trashy” style of magazine demonstrating a combination between both types of magazine.
  • 17. How does your soap USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE codes or conventions? Challenging Magazine Ancillary ConventionsI believe my magazine challenges the conventions of both the “trashy”and “sophisticated” styles of magazine by taking elements from both and combining them to create a magazine with a number of different codes which help the magazine look professional and create a quality product and keep the audience interested, and work well together. + =
