    Paraphrasing - Presentation Transcript

    1. Paraphrasing
    2. Why Paraphrase?
      • Quotes should be used rarely
      • Then your paper will sound like you!
      • It proves a level of understanding
    3. What does correct paraphrasing look like?
      • Wording must change
      • Sentence structure must change
      • The only way you can accomplish this is by reading, understanding and restating in YOUR OWN WORDS.
      • SOURCE: “If the existence of a signing type of ape was unsettling for linguists, it was also startling news for animal behaviorists.” --Flora Davis, Eloquent Animals , p. 26
    4. Paraphrasing example
      • SOURCE: “If the existence of a signing type of ape was unsettling for linguists, it was also startling news for animal behaviorists.” --Flora Davis, Eloquent Animals , p. 26
      • Which two are acceptable? Which two are still plagiarism ?
      • The existence of a signing ape unsettled linguists and startled animal behaviorists (Davis 26).
      • 2. When they learned of an ape’s ability to use sign language, both linguists and animal behaviorists were taken by surprise (Davis 26).
      • 3. According to Flora Davis, linguists and animal behaviorists were unprepared for the news that a chimp could communicate with its trainers through sign language (26).
      • 4. If the presence of a sign-language-using chimp was disturbing for scientists studying language, it was also surprising to scientists studying animal behavior (Davis 26).
    8. NOTICE!
      • All examples of paraphrasing still included CITATIONS. We must do this because the IDEA still came from somewhere else!
      • We’re giving credit where credit is due.
      • SOURCE: “If the existence of a signing type of ape was unsettling for linguists, it was also startling news for animal behaviorists.” --Flora Davis, Eloquent Animals , p. 26
How would I put my information on a notecard?
    9. My sample notecard
      • A II
      • p. 26
    10. Steps to Paraphrasing
      • Reread the information until you understand it completely
      • Turn the source upside down or push it away
      • Write the information on your card IN YOUR OWN WORDS and NOT IN A SENTENCE.
      • Check your notecard with the source to make sure you’ve changed the wording and the structure
      • YOU STILL NEED TO CITE!
      • (idea came from somewhere else)
    11. Final note…
      • You do NOT need to cite facts that are common knowledge such as where the person was born, their date of birth, etc.
      • Your note cards should instead include information that is either controversial, little-known facts or original ideas.
