    Notes on slide 1

    How I decided to do this presentation (I’ve worked both sides of the fence and have often translated between techs and library staff, public libraries class, talk about technologies in public libraries, able to talk bluntly, honestly and without much restraint, spoke with a good number of techs around the state to get these points) I’d love to see someone do the reverse of this, “What Your Librarians Want you to Know” at a conference

    What Your Tech Wants You To Know (OPLIN) - Presentation Transcript

    1. What Your Tech Wants You to Know Laura Solomon, MCIW, MLS Library Services Manager OPLIN [email_address] www.librarygeekwoes.com
      • A sense of humor is critical
      • Technology evolves.
      • Constantly.
      • “ It’s always been done that way!”
      • “ This is technology. It hasn’t been done ANY way yet!”
      • Technophobes are obstacles
      • Technology is rarely new. Just shiny.
      • Technology is NOT a silver bullet
      • Working in a vacuum equals irrelevancy.
    2.
      • function new_service{
      • if($service != “convenient”){
      • $patrons=0;
      • }else{
      • $patrons++;
      • }
      • }
      • OPACS suck.
      • Question everything. Especially vendors.
      • Understand that spam is a fact of life.
      • Beta is forever.
      • Don’t ignore the long term.
      • Better doesn’t always win.
      • Logic isn’t always logical.
    3.
    4. Don’t try this at home
      • Library 2.0 and Web 2.0 are your friends.
      • But not necessarily your BEST friends.
      • Technolust is not your friend either.
      • And the Joneses. Forget them, too.
      • Galileo had it right.
      • Support us.
      • Get a clue
      • Retain the clue
      • Pass the clue to the next shift
    5. How to get good tech help (really!)
      • Don’t be embarassed to ask for help.
      • Don’t procrastinate.
      • Explain what you are trying to do when something went wrong and then what happened— exactly.
      • Don't turn your emergency into someone else's.
      • Please don’t call us to plug in your printer. Pretty please?
      • We are not the enemy.
      • Library school is not enough.
      • Libraries are technology-driven.
      • Playing and dreaming is part of a tech’s job description.
      • “ We are all techies now.” (Don Yarman)
      • Questions, discussion, rants, raves and soapboxes
