  2. 2. What Is A Singer – Songwriter? 0The term Singer-songwriter is used to define popular music artists who write and perform their own material, which is often self-accompanied generally on acoustic guitar or piano. 0Many artist perform the roles of composer, lyricist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and often self-manager. 0The lyrics are personal, but veiled by elaborate metaphors and vague imagery, and their creative concern was to place emphasis on the song rather than their performance of it. 0Most records by such artists have a similarly straightforward and spare sound that placed emphasis on the song itself. 0Some songwriters serve as their own music publishers, others have outside publishers.
  3. 3. What Is A Singer – Songwriter? 0Although songwriters of the past commonly composed, arranged and played their own songs, more recently the pressure to produce popular hits has tended to distribute responsibility between a number of people. 0Furthermore, songwriters no longer need labels to support them. 0Technology has advanced to the point where anyone can record at home. 0The old-style apprenticeship approach to learning how to write songs is being used by universities, colleges and rock schools.
  4. 4. What Is A Singer – Songwriter? 0Knowledge of modern music technology and business skills are necessary to make a career, and colleges offer diplomas and degrees with music business modules. 0Since song writing and publishing royalties can be a source of income, particularly if its a hit record. (Legally, in US, songs written after 1934 only to be copied by its authors. The legal power to grant these permissions may be bought, sold or transferred. (Governed by International copyright law.)) 0Professional songwriters can either be employed to write directly for or alongside a performing artist, or they present songs to A&R, publishers, agents and managers for consideration.
  5. 5. History Behind A Singer – Songwriter? 0 The term has been used to refer to certain performers in rock, folk, and pop genres, although throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, artists from a number of genres applied to this category. 0 It came into popular usage from the 60s onwards to refer to a specific type of performers who followed style and conventions, confessional song writing, musical arrangements, and understated performance. 0 According to writer Larry David Smith, because it merged the roles of composer, writer, and singer, the popularity of the singer-songwriter reintroduced the Medieval troubadour tradition of "songs with public personalities" after the Tin Pan Alley era in American popular music.
