6. 6. Representation

Gender – women have become more independent and stronger characters = increase in female protagonists

Gender – men are nearly always the heroes = reflects a masculine and patriarchal ideology

Race – predominantly white actors until buddy movies of the 1980s where there was an increase in the number of black actors, and then there was an increase in the number of Asian actors, such as Jackie Chan. Immigration was increasing and multiculturalism became acceptable in society.

Place – still reflects danger, mystery and connotes adventure to keep in with genre conventions

 7. 7. Audience

Audiences are getting bigger – due to the increase of technology which makes films visually more exciting.

Cinemas are still quite cheap.

Audiences want more out of films – the next film has to be bigger and better.

 10. 10. How has the genre changed over time?

Students are to watch a variety of clips through the different ages (these could be taken or viewed from www.youtube.com, www.screenonline.org.uk, trailers from www.imdb.com). This could be done in a way where the teacher could produce a short montage of different clips over the ages where students can take notes on the different eras and say how the genre has changed, or students could go on to the Internet and research a film from a different era and compare and contrast throughout stating how and why the genre has evolved.

For example you could analyse how The Three Musketeers is different to James Bond and how they are both different to Avatar .

Possible questions for students for this activity:

In what ways has the action-adventure genre changed?

What external factors (such as technology, money, historic events) have changed and shaped the genre?
