Due to these influences, we chose a software processwith rapid feedback and change. We ran the shortestiterations we could (1 week) to get the most datapossible. We tracked our metrics closely, and we ranseveral experiments each iteration. We used themetrics to decide what worked and to what degree. Wethen adopted those things that worked and started thenext set of experiments.Chief among these experiments were variations on• How to handle task ownership,• How to assign tasks to people, and• Which style of Pair Programming to use.

There are three general strategies for deciding whoworks on which tasks: assign them to the most-qualified person, assign them irrespective of skill, orassign them to the least-qualified person. We tried allthree approaches.

We tried allthree approaches. Interestingly, these data showed an overall increasein velocity when tasks were consistently assigned tothe least qualified person. The difference wasespecially marked over long periods. Choosing theleast-qualified strategy really pays off after the teamhas used it for several iterations, but outperforms theothers even in the first iteration.
