  • 2. Photo Album German Relatives of Larry Roeder Introduction to Edition OneIn the 1970’s my mother came up with the idea that I should explore my family, travel to the places we lived, learn how ancestors comported themselves. Thefocus was to be on American locations so that I could learn more about theUnited States and what it is to be an American, an excellent proposal since someof my family on my Scots-Irish side lived in the colonies prior to the AmericanRevolution.I decided to expand the study to include my German relatives and ancestors inGermany; and that has been fantastically rewarding. For one thing, I’ve foundwonderful German relatives and have discovered a rich, interesting history abouta quite normal Germany family. This only partly tells their story, and I do hope toadd to it in later editions Larry Winter Roeder South Riding, Va. USA 8/31/2012 2

  • 15. Photo Album German Relatives of Larry RoederCyriak RöderCyriak was a master shoemaker who saw service in World Wars One and Two,and may have been in militia at the end of World War One or a veteran’s group.Cyriak’s father was Friedrich (Friedrid) Röder (married to Bibliana Scheuplein).Friedrich was the brother of Anton Bauer modo Röder, great grandfather of LarryWinter Roeder, Jr, the author.- - -One has the sense of a man of civic duty, simply because of the many timesCyriak served in uniform, as a teenager and in both World Wars. Photos alsoconvey the image of a happy man.I’d like to explore his potential role in the militia at end of World War One. Wehave no details on it, except for Photo 7 which hints at it, and it’s entirely possiblehe did not belong to such a group. What we do know is that Germany in 1919 was close to collapse. In late October,1918 the Navy planned one last big battle with the British fleet; but sailors inWilhelmshaven and Kiel mutinied, setting up councils similar to Russian soviets.Within days the revolution spread to the Western front and Germany’s majorcities and ports. This became known as the November Revolution. The Kaiserthen abdicated, followed by the King of Bavaria. Bavaria declared a socialistRepublic, though not in the Russian mold. Chancellor, Max von Baden, handedpower to Friedrich Ebert, the leader of the German Social Democrat Party (SDP).Due to the revolution, the Council of the Peoples Deputies (Rat derVolksbeauftragten) was then government (Nov 1918-Feb 1919).Communists were heavily involved but unlike in the Russian revolution, anaccommodation was made to blend the aristocracy into the new Germany. TheCouncil organized a ceasefire on 11 November, 1918 and the election of aNational Assembly in December. The leading political party (SPD) also refused togo the route of Russian soviets because of mistrust of the Bolsheviks. Inaddition to all of this was the risk of a full scale armed uprising, and indeed therewas the Sparticist uprising, putdown by right-wing militia or Freikorps. Then onAugust 11, 1919, the revolution ended with the establishment of the Weimar 15

(Front of a postcard) Figure 10 Closeup of Cyriaks Head in UniformCyriak may have won the Iron Cross. Is it possible he simply placed it in his hat?I did a little research and did find an example of someone else doing this onWikipedia. According to Wikipedia, “During WWI, approximately 218,000 EKIs,5,196,000 EKIIs and 13,000 non-combatant EKIIs were awarded. Exact numbersof awards are not known, since the Prussian military archives were destroyedduring World War II. “ But what about Bavarian archives? An expert I consulted didn’t feel that the Iron Cross would have been worn in thisway. His comment was “At first glance, given the date of birth in 1874, the soldier wasserving with the Landsturm or Landwere, aka Home Guard, during WW1, and serving inan active regiment in 1895-1897. He would have been 40 years old in 1914, and too oldfor active or reserve units, but of the age for the Landsturm and Landwere. 23
  • 24. Photo Album German Relatives of Larry RoederAn able bodied German owed military service from the age of 17 to 41. At age 21, aGerman would go into the active army for 2 or 3 years. Then there was a period of timefor the reserves. After the reserves was the Landsturm and Landwere, where thoseyounger than 21 and older than 30 would serve at times of great emergency, such as awar. I need to check on the details of the Landsturm and Landwere. They guarded rail road yards, prison camps and supply depot, generally in Germany, but sometimes in the rear areas in occupied Belgium, France and Russia later in thewar. They made use of obsolete rifles and uniforms, as well as captured rifles. Theyperformed important military work, and the work they performed allowed younger mento serve on the front lines. As the war went on, the ages for military service wereextended to 14 year olds, and any able bodied man of any age. At the very end, some12 year old boys had been called up.I will check some reference books tonight and see if I can get some more info for you.I did not see any rank insignia, but will check more closely tonight. The iron cross wasnever worn on the hat, only on the chest. It is possible that some of the photos werefrom the early post war period, when there was a lot of chaos, and a number ofvolunteer units of ex-soldiers and civilians did what they could to maintain order. Theex-soldier units were loosely known as friekorps. (Reiley, 2012)” 24

Paul then stayed unemployed until 1930, when he began to workfor restaurants, essentially as an unpaid apprentice. He eventually rosethrough the ranks and at the age 34-35 began to work in the great hotelsof Germany. Eventually he became a Chef and supervised several otherchefs. By 1938 he was working on the Isle of Norderney (North Sea) andin the Winter in Oberwisenthal, Erzebirge in Saxonia as well as in othertowns, but developed back troubles which put him in a hospital untilAugust, 1939.World War Two brought Paul back into military service in September, 1939as a marine in a mine sweeper in the North Sea, serving from 1939 to1945, and rising to the rank of Maat or sergeant. On May 8, 1945 he wascaptured by British troops in Kiel; however, he was let go right away andthen made his way home, which he reached by the end of May. So this is a research project, to move backward in time inKoser-Hauser for both the Memmel and Röder familiesNikolaus Röder ( born ? died 1866) and Margaretha Schmitt (1773 - ).Nikolaus Röder was married to Maria Margaretha Schmitt, who may have comefrom Kloster-Hauser. My Catholicconfirmation name is also Nicholas and it comes from Archbishop Nicholas Elko, a bi-rite Bishop who did much heroic work providing Mass to Catholics and Eastern RiteCatholics in Russia. Nicholas T. What interested me in Elko was thatthe Church in the East grew and developed from the Churches in Jerusalem, Antiochand Alexandria. These three Eastern centers shared a common language, Greek, andsimilar mode of discourse which formed the basis for the subsequent development ofthe Eastern Christian tradition. Small world.Four weeks later Kurt’s unit was transferred to Hungary where it began one ofthe last German offensives on the Gran River against Russian troops until theend of the war, bringing him near Vienna. • 181. Photo Album German Relatives of Larry RoederTranslation of Appendix 1Sept 28, 1981Dear Mr. Roeder:Unfortunately we cannot give a positive response to you. In the Federal Republic ofGermany the attestations of marital status cases ( births, marriages and deaths) weredone since 1.1.1876 out by the State registry offices; before the churches wereresponsible for that. The accuracy of the information about your great-great-grandparents of Anton andMargaretha Roeder could therefore not be verified by the registry office Bad Neustadta.d .der Saale. Therefore we next gave the letter to the Catholic rectory " MaryHirrrreifahrt " next. From there was also no confirmation of the information. The Name"Roeder" as well as "Röder " is in Bad Neustadt a.d . der Saale actually a well-knownand common name. Both names exist in our city. Perhaps you should once again check the details of yourgreat-great-grandparents and, if necessary after us new knowledge or the Catholicrectory "Maria Hinmelfahrt " cover letter 181

This is dated 1893.Germany004.jpg is confusing. Clearly taken at the end of the war or later. What kind of rifle is being heldby my relative? On the back of the card, (Germany010.jpg) it says Erinnerung an die Lohnwache zumVölkerkrieg 1914. Begin 1. August Ende Okt. 1918 Souvenir of the Lohnwache {civil guard} to thewar of the peoples 1914. Start 1 August End Oct. 1918. The word Lohnwache isn’t used any moreand can be Vigilante Service, according to my translator. Is it possible that Cyriak was a memberof the veterans who fought against the Communist attempt to take over after the armitace?Germany011.jpg. No date. I suspect this is a Red Cross uniform but perhaps Army. Do you know? 185
