Reasons for studying file systems complexity of database is easier to understand understanding file system problems helps to avoid problems with DBMS systems. Knowledge of file system is useful for converting file system to database system
• File systems typically composed of collection of file folders, each tagged and kept in cabinet• Contents of each file folder are logically related.
Manual File System was used in paper and pencil systems. papers within these systems were organized in order to facilitate the expected use of the data. this was accomplished through a system of file folders and filing cabinets.
FUNCTIONS : served as a data repository for small data collections. Cumbersome for large collections
Advantages: a manual filing system cannot be destroyed byan accidental power loss. hackers cannot access a manual filing systemfrom another computer. this helps security issues.
DisadvantagesSummarizing data and writing reports takes a lot time. data duplication – lack of security
Common errors Repetition of workSlow retrieval of data
