  • 3. Historical Background
    • This race was started in 1966 to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of Elephant Butte Dam which was completed in 1916.
    • The race is 106.9 miles long- A treaty settled the water rights dispute in 1906; The river is 1960 miles long
    • Each crew is made up of 2 people; one American and one Mexican to celebrate the cooperation between the two countries

  • 4. General Rules
    • Vehicles must be human powered only. No motorized vehicles will be allowed.
    • Participants will remain in the river area, defined as the area from levee to levee, at all times during the race.
    • Polluting of the river will be grounds for immediate disqualification from the race.

    • The Blue represents the Rio Grande
    • The Green represents Mexico
    • The Red represents the United States

  • 6. Required items
    • A minimum of 5 rolls of duct tape
    • 2 bailing buckets, minimum 2 gal.each
    • Crew flag identifying sponsors, Minimum 2’ X 4’
    • “ Boat” of any material, must support safety equipment

  • 7. To the winner …
    • $1906 Dollars & $1960 Pesos
    • 2 trips for 4 to go white water rafting in Colorado and in Big Bend
    • Tickets to the Cinemark Theater and the premier showing of the movie, The Big River, starring River Phoenix, Kevin Costner, and Mel Gibson
    Extra credit
  • 8. Special Awards
    • The Silvery Minnow Award- awarded to the crew who shows the most concern for the river as voted on by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
    The Mockingbird Award- awarded to the crew who comes in last with an intact boat
  • 9. More Special Awards…
    • Duct Tape Award- awarded to the crew with the most unusual use of the duct tape. The winner will receive 1960 miles of duct tape
