  15. 15. 16 SECOND CUREIn tennis, time management is critical to success. To keep your cool, and stay on top of things, youhave to give yourself a moment to pause, and plan the next step. And when you have a routine toreturn to between points, it makes it that much easier to use your time to your advantage.1 | POSITIVE RESPONSEImmediately after a point, make some kind ofpositive gesture. Straighten your posture, pumpyour fist – anything to help you let go and focuson what’s next and you can do it.2 | RELAXATIONBreathe deeply andwalk confidently.give yourself4 seconds to relaxas you walk towardthe baseline.TIP: Keep fromlosing or wanderingconcentration byfocusing your eyeson your strings.16 SECOND CUREDECIDE: Use yourstrengths, attack theirweaknesses, or both? Ifyou’re not sure, go withyour strength.4 | PREPARATIONThis is your Excalibur moment.Step up to the baseline for serve.(Or, to the return spot.) Create aroutine or ritual, something youare comfortable with. FALL 2011 marketline14 marketline FALL 2011 15Daddy, when can we go!August 21 to September 6Save on passes at:Pantone 186 BlackFile: SWY_TM_Horz_2W.epsDescription: Safeway TM Horizontal Signature 2 Color on WhiteDate: March 23, 2005Celebrate a hundred moreyears of fun at the PNE.Posted with the supportof the City of Vancouver.www.pne.caThe PNE’s 100th Anniversary couldnt have fallen in a moreexciting year in the city. “We started the year as the 2010 OlympicWinter Games venue for short-track speed skating and figureskating, we welcomed the BC Lions to the new temporary stadiumon-site at Empire Field, and we closed out the summer by throwingan amazing 17-day party celebrating our 100th Anniversary,” saysPNE President and CEO Mike McDaniel.A celebration years in the making“Every British Columbian has a special PNE memory – first job, first date, first concert or special time with family and friends – andwe knew we had to tap into that psyche,” says Shelley Frost, PNEVice President of Marketing. An integrated and multi-facetedcampaign focused on this concept. The campaign needed to appear fresh and current and focusedon providing moments of fun and celebration. “What better wayto say it than that we were celebrating 100 years of fun?” saysKim Madu, PNE’s Director of Marketing. The 100Years of Funconcept was built on the pillars that formed the foundation of allthe great moments on-site – fun, music, sports, family and rides. It was brought to life with a new logo, which was integrated intoeverything the PNE did.To launch the Fair with a bang, several marquee events wereproduced, generating buzz before the 100th Anniversary Faireven opened. These included a return of the iconic PNE paradewith over 2,000 performers, large inflatables, appearances byDal Richards, Mayor Gregor Robertson and former Miss PNEs.On opening day, the PNE kicked off the Fair with the biggestconcert event of the summer, featuring a four-hour outdoorperformance by the Beach Boys and BC’s own Bryan Adams.Bringing fun to lifeThe core of the 100th Anniversary campaign ran throughoutthe spring and summer of 2010. It included a new websitedesign plus TV and radio spots that took people throughthe generational memories of the PNE, with every aspect ofthe campaign designed to invite people to come celebratethe 100th Anniversary at the Fair at the PNE in August.Thiscampaign was supported through merchandise, a communitystreet team, a mascot,TV, radio, outdoor, print, online, contesting, and mobile and social media, and included both mainstream andethnic media.Web traffic almost tripled from the same period theyear before. Other unique consumer touchpoints included:• A 100th Anniversary collectors cup in the shape of 1-0-0.• A commemorative book chronicling the history of the PNEover 10 decades.• A “wrap” around the Pacific Coliseum of 40-foot exteriorbanners that could be seen from the North Shore.• A free PNE iPhone app, so that guests could tailor theirexperience, which was downloaded by more than 3,600 usersin its first few weeks of availability.CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF FUNIn British Columbia, not many brands – and even fewer non-profit organizations –make it to the 100-year mark. There is no handbook on how to celebrate such amagnificent milestone. The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), on the cusp of a brightnew century, wanted to celebrate with creativity and fun, looking forward to thefuture while still respecting the organization’s past, showing that they werent just100 years old, but they were 100 years strong.• Throughout August, daily tweets were sent out, celebrating great moments in PNE history.• A strong email campaign resulted in open and click-through rates higher than industry standard. An onlinecontest called the 100th Anniversary Awards invitedpeople to vote for their favourite PNE attraction, show, food or event from over the years. This contest resultedin a 20% increase in the PNE email database.• Leveraging their agricultural roots, the PNE partneredwith Meadows Maze to have the 100th Anniversarytheme cut into their corn maze. All summer, visitors tothe maze wove their way through mini-donuts, rollercoasters and pinwheels.• A 100th Anniversary mascot and street team attendedover 30 local community events. The “100 years of fun” brand was embraced by theentire company. Human Resources launched new 100thAnniversary uniforms for all staff, concessionairesproudly displayed the logo on their booths, hot dogs andhamburgers were wrapped in custom “100 years of fun”paper and local storefronts had windows painted withtheir favourite PNE anniversary memory.ResultsIn 2010, the PNE generated the highest total revenue ever, exceeding $50 million for the first time in their history. The 2010 Fair at the PNE was the largest and best-attended ticketed event in BC with over 937,000 guests;this is in comparison to attendance levels in the 700–800sduring the years of uncertainty when people thought thatthe PNE was moving.Though some tourist attractionswere down 20–40% in 2009 and 2010, the PNEshowed growth in attendance of 9.7% in 2010.On-site research showed that 93% of attendees wereaware of the PNE’s 100th Anniversary and 65% weresomewhat or greatly influenced by the anniversaryin their decision to attend. Because the PR teamcustom-pitched media, the PNE received an astounding$13 million in earned media coverage during 2010.Data from an economic impact study conducted in2010 showed that the PNE’s 100th Anniversary Fairbrought an economic impact of over $40 million to thecity of Vancouver and an impact of over $54 millionacross BC, proving that the thrill of rides, dazzlingshows, fluffy ducklings and mini-donuts still drawsfamilies and friends together, 100 years later. The rejuvenated image and reconnection with guestshelped change perceptions, feed the public consultationprocess and provide the necessary support for CityCouncil, in December 2010, to approve a new 25-year$250 million redevelopment plan for Hastings Park thatwould allow the PNE business to grow and thrive intothe next century.
