Grunt Productions 2007 Raster Navigation Charts (RNC)  Produced by “scanning” the master components used in the production of the paper chart.  “Unintelligent” Data.  Additional “header” data is supplied with each chart, i.e. the Satellite position correction.  The UKHO product is known as Admiralty Raster Chart System (ARCS)

Grunt Productions 2007 Electronic Navigation Charts (ENC) also known as Vector Charts  Produced by giving digital values to every point on the chart  Conform to IHO standard S57  Enables computer to identify the object, portray it in the required form, place it in the correct position and provide information about its attributes  Intelligent data that can be interrogated  UKHO ENC product is known as ENC - PILOT

Grunt Productions 2007 Vector Considerations  Advantages  Tailored display, which permits layers of information to be displayed  Linked to much more information  Smart Data, as the user “zooms” in on a position, more detailed data can be displayed, i.e. more soundings  Disadvantages  Slow and expensive to produce  What you see may not be what you need
