  • 3. What is a Watershed… What is a Lake… A lake is a large, inland body of freshwater surrounded by land and or mountains. (Webster Dictionary) The boundary separating the catchment basins of different rivers. It is the land area that drains into a particular lake, river and ocean.   • 5. Lake Mainit Situation…
    • 4th Largest Lake in the Country
    • It has a total area of about 17,060 hectares (BFAR)
    • Lakeshore has a total length of 62.10 kms.
    • It has a total of 31 lakeshore barangays
    • Divided almost equally between Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte.
    • It falls within the jurisdiction of municipality of Mainit, Alegria, Kitcharao and Jabonga.
    • It can be classified as oligotrophic (nutrient poor-oxygen rich) lake from the physico-chemical (Limnological Study)
    • It’s water is classified as Class A by the EMB
    • Surface temperature range between 27.00 ˚ C -30.00 ˚ C.

      • Destruction of unquantifiable terrestrial flora and fauna including its habitat
      • Wood quality is becoming poorer or sub-standard
      • No tax collected by the government that will be used for continued rehabilitation of the forest
      • Massive soil erosion and landslides in the area where the felled trees are dragged
      • Flashflood
      • Siltation in the lowland especially along the lakeshore

      • Extinction of catadromous (fish that lives in fresh water and breeds in the salt water) and anadromous (fish that lives in salt water and breeds in the freshwater) fishes in the lake.

      • Solid waste are found in the lake bottom that cause obnoxious odor

    • 10. No Unified Ordinance
      • What is illegal in one municipality might not be illegal to the other. Some illegal fishers would perform their activity in areas where illegal activity is tolerated; and
      • Apprehension is difficult.

      • Effective and important programs cannot be implemented due to the lack of financial support.

    • Do not throw your garbage/waste anywhere because it would cause clogging of canals and flooding in the streets
    • Start recycling, reducing and reusing things at home and in school
    • Do not introduce exotic fishes without permission from proper authority
    • Do not introduce Janitor Fish
