El estudio analiza la figura de Samuel Pepys, autor de un Diario íntimo entre 1660 y 1669, en su relación con la ciencia del siglo XVII. Pepys fue miembro de la Royal Society y colaboró en el proyecto de John Wilkins de una lengua artificial. El estudio de su Diario permite vincular los intereses de Pepys por el lenguaje, la oratoria, la escritura cifrada y el progreso científico a un estado de opinión que emerge entre los eruditos de su época. En el estilo sencillo y vitalista del Diario de Pepys se aprecia la afinidad entre su escritura privada y el espíritu del empirismo que proclamó la Royal Society. Finalmente, la comparación entre Pepys y Wilkins revela que la taquigrafía es la clave de sus trabajos y la razón del fracaso de Wilkins y de la popularidad y vigencia de Pepys. A las numerosas ediciones del Diario de Pepys, iniciadas en 1825, se suma una reciente en castellano. El Diario es una obra literaria e histórica de primer orden, que documenta bajo una perspectiva insólita la ciencia del siglo XVII o siglo del lenguaje.

LINGUISTICS AND SCIENCE OF THE 17TH CENTURY, IN THE DIARY OF SAMUEL PEPYS
The study analyzes the figure of Samuel Pepys, author of a private Diary between 1660 and 1669, referred to his relationship with the science of the 17th century. Pepys was a member of the Royal Society and contributed to the project of John Wilkins for an artificial language. The study of his Diary is a relevant matter to link his interests in different subjects, mainly language, oratory, coded writing and the scientific progress that influenced on the emerging opinion among the scholars of his time. The plain and vital style oft he Diary of Pepys reveals the affinity between his private writing and the spirit of empiricism proclaimed by the Royal Society. Finally, the comparison between Pepys and Wilkins reveals that shorthand is the very key of his work, that is also the cause of the failure of Wilkins as well as the popularity and validity of Pepys. To the several editions of the Samuel Pepys Diary, that began in 1825, it must be added a recent one in Spanish. The Diary is a literary and historical masterpiece that makes evidence, under an unusual prospective, of the science of the 17th century or the century of language.
