  • 1. Wallpaper History Society Design Competition 2011   To celebrate the 25 th Anniversary of the Wallpaper History Society

    •  
    • The Wallpaper History Society was established to promote an awareness and understanding of historic and contemporary wall coverings. Its scope is broad and encompasses not only the history of wallpapers but also topics relating to other types of wall coverings and the subject of interior decoration as a whole.
    • The aims of the Society are to encourage research and provide information on all aspects of wallpaper design, production and consumption; to foster and awareness of the importance of preserving period decorations; and to provide a much needed point of contact for all the different groups and individuals interested in these issues. 
    • Now running for the third year, the WHS would like to invite current BA Surface/Print Design students to take part in a competition to produce a selection of designs suitable for contemporary wallpaper based on the following:

    • To celebrate the 25 th Anniversary of the Wallpaper History Society looking to the Past, Present and Future.................
    • Think about the historical past, the everyday present and the shaping of the future in relation to wall coverings

    • Research
    • Strong evidence of personal research is required.
    • Museum visits, Exhibitions/Galleries, places of interest, Stately homes, houses and gardens, Archives, Libraries and Learning Resources.
    • You must include evidence/examples of appropriate Market Research for the product and the theme.

    • Product
    • Designs for a collection of contemporary wallpaper based on the above theme. Each design can include a variety of subject areas or specifically one. It is not essential that the designs work only as a collection.
  • 11.
    • Learning outcomes
    • Show an understanding of how design work-shop processes can be used to develop design ideas for a contemporary market
    • Make informed choices in design development and imagery in combination with processes
    • Exploit processes to develop design ideas, mood-boards, more resolved pieces and illustrations of concept/in situs

    • Submission Requirements:
    • Three Storey-boards minimum size A3 max A2 one each for past, present and future
  • 14.
    • Submission Requirements:
    • 1 x sketchbook which must show clear evidence of traditional drawing and manual design skills.
  • 15.
    • Submission Requirements:
    • 1 x research file (a collection of loose leaf torn magazine pages will not be acceptable).
  • 16.
    • Submission Requirements:
    • A collection of a Minimum of 6 designs that responds to our theme ‘Past, Present and Future wall coverings’ i.e. a student can look at historical contexts/archives but design all 6 papers to one of the interpretations from past, present and future.

    • Submission Requirements:
    • Size: approx 56cms wide, length to show repeat clearly if relevant and colour-ways no larger than A4
  • 18.
    • Submission Requirements:
    • All submissions, sketchbooks and files must be clearly named either on the reverse or inside front cover and accompanied by a copy of the Registration Form paper clipped to the front of the sketchbook.

    • Submission Requirements:

    • All shortlisted students will take part in a London based exhibition of work during September 2011
    • A sponsored private view
    • A 4 week paid work placement, at Zoffany worth over £1,400
    • A 4 week work placement with Timorous Beasties including £240 towards expenses to be taken in the summer of 2012
    • 3 x cash prizes
    • All 2 nd stage students will receive a copy of the new Sanderson Design Book The Essence of English Decoration

    • Exhibition Criteria
    • The chosen candidates will be expected to produce a 2 metre length of their final design in full repeat
    • 1 x Sketchbook only per finalist can be displayed
    • along side the final piece.
    • Postcards and business cards may be left.
    • All students who are chosen to exhibit must be available for the private view and one of the two days over the first weekend to be available to steward the exhibition (10/11 th September)

    • Friends and Family Reception 10 th September
    • Open to the public from the 11 – 17 th September.
