  • 3. Internet in Schools Summary
    • In this article it states that the internet is important for students. It also says that schools are a common place for teens to get online. It has researched students on their internet use and where they use it (and on the next slide I has the stats). In the articles it also talks about the agreement that the internet is useful in school but, are our kids using it for unrelated school activities (myspace, cheating) more then more school work.
    • I found out that 37% of students believe that their peers use the internet to cheat in school.

    • THE STATS in THIS ARTICLE
    • 2005 Pew Internet survey found that 87% of all youth between the ages of 12 and 17 use the internet. (that mean 21 million students)
    • 2000 Pew Internet survey found that 73% of all youth between the ages of 12 to 17 use the internet (that is 11 million)
    • THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO ARE USING THE INTERNET HAS GONE UP 11% IN 5 YEARS!!!!
    • 1 out of 5 students who use the internet from multiple locations list school as the location where they go online the most often

  • 5. What I think
    • I think that with any technology you have to take the good with the bad. I do believe that because of the internet students are cheating more and getting away with it more. I do know that internet in schools in a must (especially in college). I think that the statistics that Pew Internet Survey gave the article were very accurate and I am happy to see that so many more students are being able to get online and use the internet. I also thought it was good that 1 and 5 students said that the main place they use the internet at school. To me that mains that schools are doing the right thing and spending their money on computers and that students are learning to use the computer at young ages. When children start using the computer and understanding it, it makes me think that they are going to do better in life and in their career because they have internet and computer skills.

  • 6. Internet safety for Students and Schools
    • This article is about the internet being a powerful tool that can help educate students and how we need to have our students take a class on the dangers of using the internet and how to be safe at school.
    • It explains to the teacher how to tell the students that the internet is not a toy and that there are many potential dangers that they need to be a where of.
    • The article also provides pointers on keeping the our students safe on student-friendly websites that can help them with homework, research, communication with other students and with creativity

    • LESSONS
    • See things from the students views viewpoint –understand what your student wants to get out of the internet use
    • The Potential Risks – Look to see if anyone can get on the site and makes sure students knows the risk and that not only good people at on this site.
    • Internet Safety at Home – Get a system where a students asks their parents if this site is okay before they go to it
    • Internet safety at School – As a teacher make sure your students are going to the sites you tell them to go on and not any others.
    • Drafting home and school internet use policies – Make sure that the school has stricter policies when it comes to the safety of your students use the internet.
    • Exploring student-friendly websites – The internet is not packed with student-friendly websites so do you homework and research the site before a students go to it.

  • 8. How I feel
    • I love this article, I think that every teacher should do this. The internet is a powerful thing and it needs to be used correctly ESPECIALLY around children. I agree with everything in this article and I think that I will implement this in my classroom whenever I get to be a teacher. I really like how Abbi Perets (the author) made this into lessons and she has a class you can sign up for so she can go more in-depth with you to help you be the best you can be.

  • 9. Student who used the Internet site inappropriately
    • This is a news article that happened in a small town of Livingston. The Howell school district took action against student who used the Internet site inappropriately. A student in Howell put on his facebook page the quote “Rebel and Proud” which is a racist quote according to this newspaper. The school official said that if they find anymore students who violated our ‘acceptable use police and code of conduct they will be disciplined the same as the other boy.

  • 10. More
    • The student is not in danger of expulsion at this time but, the investigation is pending at this time. The article also said that they want parents to be aware of, and monitor, their children’s Internet usage. The school wants the cite of Howell to get involved. The school is taking many steps to address the issue. They are getting 30 members of the diversity club to go to a meeting to discuss this issue.
MY VIEW on THIS CONCLUSION PAGE OR
  • 11. MY VIEW
    • I am glad that the Howell School district is taking action to this but, I do not think that “Rebel and Proud” is that racism, maybe I am not understanding something about that but, I do not think they had to take more discipline then just telling the student to take it off of his facebook. The student did not put that quote on his facebook at school, he did it at his house, and the last time I checked you can not access facebook in school. The school blocks that site I am pretty sure. The reason the school got involved seems a little fishy to me but, I am glad that they are being active in protecting any students right to not be discriminated .
    CONCLUSION PAGE
  • 12. CONCLUSION
    • After looking at all 3 of these articles I have decided that internet is very important when it comes to doing good in the classroom. I would like to see more teachers taking opportunity of learning more about how we can protect the students from getting on bad websites that can in danger them. The Howell story is all to common and if we take a look at what the students are doing they will be less likely to do that sort of thing.
